First day, 6 month old with reflux :(
hello!! :) my 4th baby, wyatt, was diagnosed with a mild case of acid reflux at his 4 month appointment. he is my 1st baby with reflux so this is a learning experience for our whole family. wyatt is on zantac (1.25 ml twice a day) & that seemed to be working but now that we are feeding him baby food, he is back to waking every 3-4 hours at night. his reflux is very mild, he doesn't cry during feeding or when he spits up, he just wakes up EVERY night now. any suggestions?

I would say if the reflux is bothering him enough to keep him up all night, it's not exactly mild. My baby had a very happy temperment despite reflux and a severe milk protein intolerance, and never cried even when she spit up buckets and couldn't get comfortable enough to sleep for more than an hour at a time.

Zantac is an H2 blocker, a class of med that is not really that effective in treating chronic reflux. Not only is it incredibly weight-sensitive, the body can also develop a tolerance to it quite quickly and it will stop working. If I were you I'd get him on a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) like Prevacid, Prilosec, or Zegerid. While H2 blockers work to neutralize acid, PPIs stop the acid before it starts. They are the "gold standard" in treating reflux and are considered very safe. Hopefully your baby would only have to be on it for a short while until he outgrows the reflux. I would trial a PPI and see where that gets you. Good luck!

thank you for your info. i feel so helpless sometimes, he went from sleeping through the night to waking up every 3-4 hours as soon as we started baby food. which is the exact opposite of my other three kids. i say it is mild because he is always so happy & he doesn't cry when he eats or when he spits up. but i suppose if it wakes him up every night, it's not so mild. i will ask his doctor at his next appointment about switching medications.

Zantac user too
hello, my son just turned 6 mths now, and he was also diagnosed at 4 mths. Zantac worked for him until about a week ago.. unfortunately he has gone back to fighting us to eat. The GI increased the dosage to match his current weight, and Im going to have to call her tomorrow to see if she can prescribe a ppi for my son as the Zantac is not working. I guess their bodies do learn to tolerate it
