Mom to two refluxers. DS 4.5 years, on prevacid since 5 weeks. Trial wean this summer...fail. Intolerant of dairy and soy DD born Nov 2010. Currently on zegerid. Had stomach malrotation & surgery at 9 months. Avoiding dairy/soy with her while BFing.
Endoscopy & pH probe done
My 4.5 year old had an endoscopy and pH probe study done recently. This was the first time he's had any testing done. He's had a history of reflux and been unable to come off prevacid. During the most recent wean, he was able to verbalize epigastric pain and he wasn't sleeping well. I was very nervous but everything went well. He was a very brave boy and cooperative with the staff. The endoscopy looked good. Biopsies were negative for allergies or infection. He lasted 18 hours with the ph probe in before he pulled it out in the middle of the night. we chose not to have it replaced. It showed that he refluxed 156 times during that period. the doctor still has hope he can outgrow it. He wants us to try to do short weans every 3-6 months to see how he does over the next few years.

I am very glad we finally had the testing done. It was a good experience. My son loved being at the hospital for the most part. He got tons of Mommy and daddy's attention, got to eat fries in bed while watching tv and do lots of playing! It is a relief to know that we have been medicating him all this time for the right condition. It's good to know his esophagus doesn't have damage also. hoping over time he can still come off meds.

It sounds like you got some peace of mind from the testing. It's good to know for sure that you are on the right track. I hope your little boy will eventually outgrow the reflux too.

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
I am SO glad that the testing went well, though sorry to hear that it shows he is still refluxing so much. It's wonderful he handled it all so well, and especially that there has not been any damage to his esophagus.

Must be such a relief that your little boy handled all the testing so well and good to know that you were medicating him for the right condition. When he pulled the probe out at night, I hope it didn't do any damage and did you have to rush to the hospital right away? Kavya is 3 yrs old and we have only done the endoscopy so far. We might consider doing the ph probe if she doesn't get better in another year. She doesn't even like a bandage on her (she will usually pull it out soon after) and will never let me even clear her nose with a bulb when she has a cold (the last time I tried she cried so hard that she ended up vomiting) so really not sure how she will handle the probe. Was there any sedation done when they inserted the probe?

My DS had the pH probe placed when he was sedated for the endoscopy. So that wasn't a worry for me. I am sure they can use versed or something if it is done with out being under already. We had to stay overnight in the hospital. I am not sure at what age they send the child home with the tube but our GI doctor said he was too young. The tube was really thin. I was amazed how well he did with it in and he wasn't too bothered by it. He probably should of had restraints on to keep him from pulling it at night but oh well, we had enough info at that point, it wasn't a big deal. He didn't damage anything pulling it out.

Thanks for the info, Mangogal. I wish my GI had put in the ph probe when they had sedated her for the endoscopy. Never thought of that at the time. Oh, well. Yes, Versed would be an option. But I am not sure what didn't suit her...the anesthesia meds or the versed because after the endoscopy she was crying inconsolably for 4 hours and was very uncomfortable.

Sedation or not depends largely on where its performed (as does staying or going home with it), though I highly recommend insisting on it if it's not the norm -- something we did NOT do and REALLY, REALLY wish we had in hindsight....

kavyamom..that sounds miserable post op. Hope you can come up with a good plan for medication if a pH probe is needed.
