Mum of 3 beautiful boys 3, 8, 10
New to ForumHi,
I'm new to this Forum and relativly new to the who concept of being a parent of a child with Reflux / GERD. I have 3 beautiful boys, 10, 8 and 3. It is my 10 year old who has recelty been diagnosed with GERD. He only developed it about 7 months ago and it has gradually got worse to the point that he is having a hard time coping with it all.
I have also gotten to the point where I need support so I can stay strong for my son.
About 7 months ago he would occasionally bring small amounts of undigested or partially digested food up on his pillow of a night. As the months have gone by his reflux has become more frequent to the point where he would bring up small amounts over 60 times a day. He didn't complain much of burning, only for about 2 mins after each time the reflux came up.
I originally took him to our GP who put him on Losec 10mg once a day. This helped with the burning and slightly helped with the frequency of the reflux but by no means kept it under control. After my son started refusing to eat or drink I returned to the GP who referred him to a paediatrician. He then had a blood test for the Helebactor (not sure of spelling) Bacteria that causes Stomach ulcers. This came back negative but the paediatrician gave him the course of antibiotics anyway as sometimes the bacteria is not detectable with a blood test. He also upped his Losec to 20mg a day. This did help with reducing the frequency of the Reflux but there are still some days when he gets it over 50 times during the day.
My son has now been referred to a Gastro specialist and we are waiting for an appointment.
I've seen my son go from a happy confident young boy to a depressed child who is not enjoying life like a child should. He is embarrassed to go out in public on a bad day just in case he is not able to contain the reflux and it comes flowing out of his mouth. He is also being teased by the children at school. His is reluctant to eat and although he is not loosing significant weight he also hasn't gained any weight for at least 6 months. His BMI is below the 3rd Percentile and he is considered anorexic.
I would love to hear other's stories and perhaps get some advice.
Sorry about the long winded post and thanks for taking the time to read.

|Ugh, what a rough age to have GERD start up with such a vengeance! Be sure to check out the Reading Room here for the lowdown on reflux basics, and someone just posted a link to find archived information from Marci-kids, which would be another great source of information for you.|
Also, if you haven't already located it, there's a forum here for the kids themselves, which might be a place for your son to connect with other kids around his age who have similar experiences. There is also a Kids page (look along the menu on the left on the home page, it's near the bottom) which has some helpful articles about being a kids with relfux.
