Recently my 7 month old won't sleep
Hi. My daughter who is 7 months old has really bad reflux. She's on 2.5 ml of prevacid 2 times a day and we give her mylanta at night. She was beginning to sleep better a few weeks ago but we started having problems when I tried some new solids with her and put her on enfamil ar for one day. The nurse said to give her Mylanta at night to see if that would help and to our delight it did work for a week. Then we went on vacation and her sleep began to deteriate the 2nd week of vacation. At first she would wake up in discomfort. She would squirm and arch her back. I thought maybe it was the bananas I gave her or the pharmacy (where we vacationed at) didn't create the prevacid suspension correctly. But we've been back home for a week and now she continues to wake up every 2 hours. This last week she doesn't seem as uncomfortable in middle of night as she has before, so I wonder if it's just become a bad habit. I should meniton that I don't think her meds are working because she only sleep feeds and takes about half an ounce to an ounce while she's awake. So, feeding is a major challenge. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Your dosage seems very low to me. I would start with an increase in the Prevacid dosage and see where you sit in 2 weeks.

Thanks
Thanks for the feedback. Do you know around what dosage she should be? She weighs approx. 17 and a half lbs. We're getting a third opinion this Friday, so I'll be curious to see what this doctor has to say.

I agree - the dosage seems extremely low. I definitely would not chalk her night waking up to habit. Trust your instinct and her cues. If she was comfortable she would very likely be sleeping.

I believe the max "recommended" dose of Prevacid for babies is 15mg per day. However, babies metabolize PPIs much faster than older kids and adults, so many doctors will prescribe a higher than "recommended" dose. My daughter's reflux didn't get fully under control until she was at 27mg Prevacid per day (split dose - half in the morning, half at night). She's 23 months now and we've been weaning her off the Prevacid - currently at 16mg per day.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Also, administration of the Prevacid is very important - on an empty stomach, one hour before a meal.

Thanks for your feedback. I'll mention that to my doctor. As of now we're switching from the liquid prevacid to a more stable form, capsules. I hope this helps.
