Vigilantmom - question about miralax
Vigilantmom, now that Ryan is off of PPI drugs, do you still need to give him Miralax? How long were you giving it to him? If you have stopped giving Miralax, how are his bowel movements now? See my earlier post. Just a little concerned about adding drug after drug to my baby's system :(

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. As soon as Ryan came off the PPIs he was able to come off the Miralax and all was well. If he has bananas he gets constipated but apple juice or magnesium is all it takes. Ryan was on the PPIs and Miralax for 3 yrs. Keep in mind that Miralax is NOTHING like the laxatives of old. It is stimulant free. It works by drawing water into the intestine. I worried more that I would never get him off the PPI than the Miralax. I know so many kids that have been on it till they were 6 or 7 and then one day their systems just figure it out and they can go on their own. As far as the dosage, I adjusted it according to his diet. More some days and less others. How are you coming along with the straight up Prevacid. Have you read on the FB site that you can use Now brand calcium carbonate as a substitute for your Caracream Max?

The group page is called Fans of Marci-Kids and Reflux Solutions. The photo is the caracream bottle.

Thanks, Karen. Were you giving between 1tsp and 2tsp of the Miralax? Yeah, like you said I am more worried about her being on the PPI than the Miralax but still each drug added makes be a little uncomfortable. BTW how was the claritin for Ryan? Were you giving it twice a day? I am giving Zyrtec in the evening and I think it is making Kavya very tired during the day as well.

The FB page talks about making Zegerid and Prilosec immediate release but didn't see anything about Prevacid. Nobody seems to have tried it with Prevacid. Do you know anyone who has tried making Prevacid immediate release with CC? I actually have CC (the NOW brand) because that is what I used when I tried the Zegerid powder packs.

Yes. It was somewhere between 1 and 2 tsp once a day. I just eyeballed it and didn't measure. 2 of my neighbor's daughters were on it too at a much higher dose for more than once a day.

Claritin worked great for Ryan this time of year. I just gave it once a day. In the Spring I needed to use Zyrtec. He doesn't take any now. Once the reflux cleared up, so did that. I assume it is because his nasal lining is not constantly irritated anymore???

I will do some digging on the Prevacid with NOW. My guess is No, because the prevacid is in the tiny balls so you need the theresol to dissolve the medicine balls first. Is your pharmacy doing a good job with mixing the compound now. I am finding that more and more of them are doing it right now.

Please do let me know if you find out anything about making Prevacid with CC. Thanks. I am giving Prevacid beads directly (1/2 capsule in the morn and 1 1/2 in the evening). Haven't tried compounding it at a pharmacy. My ins coverage for Prevacid is really bad and so I am just doing the OTC. I believe with the pharmacy compound I would still need to administer on empty stomach since they don't add as much buffer as BB so I haven't really tried that. Also, she is very sensitive to flavors, etc. so ideally making it at home would be the best.

Remind me... because I have a short memory... have you tried Zegerid or Prilosec yet?

Tried Zegerid powder packs and she was allergic to it. Not sure if she was allergic to just the buffer used in that or the omeprazole itself.
