mangogal - question regarding Zegerid powder
Hi Mangogal, I see that you are using the Zegerid powder packs and so I thought I would directly ask you. With the marci kids website down it is hard to get any info about this. You mentioned that you are giving 8mg three times a day. So, 24mg total. So, did your doc prescribe the 40mg packs or the 20mg pack? If you use the 40mg pack, do you just throw the rest of the solution at the end of the day? I have no idea how this powder pack works and how long you can keep the solution, etc. and just wanted to ask about it. I am tired of my current GI and looking for another but in the meantime I might have to get the script from my regular pedi and he really might have no idea about Zegerid and I just want to be educated about it before I ask him about it. Thanks for any info.

Mom to two refluxers. DS 4.5 years, on prevacid since 5 weeks. Trial wean this summer...fail. Intolerant of dairy and soy DD born Nov 2010. Currently on zegerid. Had stomach malrotation & surgery at 9 months. Avoiding dairy/soy with her while BFing.
It stinks that the marci kids site is down. It was so helpful! We use the 20 mg powder packets. I add 6.5 mL of water to the packet and it mizes to 10 mL. So the concentration is 2 mg/mL. I give 4 mL, 8 mg three times a day. I use a over a packet a day. Leftovers are stored in the fridge. I know the website had said it is stable in the fridge for a while (I can't remember how long). I want to say it is even stable 24 hours at room temp.

I believe the 40 mg packets were recommended on the website for babies. But they don't have enough buffer in them at that concentration. so they wanted you to add in mylanta cherry supreme also. This was during the mylanta recall for me and I couldn't get a hold of any. In the end, I didn't want to be giving another medication. The 20 mg packets were prescribed by my pediatrician and have worked well for us. The first two weeks were rough with lots of gas. I used simethicone with all feeds. Good luck!

Thanks. I am still confused though of how I am going to use the 40mg packets.

My DD is currently taking Prevacid with BB: morning 3ml (9mg) and evening 6ml (18mg), so total of 27mg.

- How much water do I mix with the 40mg packet? How much of the solution would I give morn and night?

- My doc is not keen on using Mylanta everyday so can I mix only water with the Zegerid?

Mangogal, how did you figure out that you need 6.5 ml of water to make 10ml? That's what I am confused about...how much water do I add to the 40mg packet? I think I would need a 3mg/ml concentration since my dosage is quite high. So, I need to end up with about 13ml so that would be 3mg/ml concentration for the 40mg packets. The pharmacist hasn't been helpful and the doc doesn't really know much about buffers, etc.

Just found this info on another website (now wondering if I can just use water instead of the mylanta for the 40mg. I am not keen on using the 20mg pack because I would be using almost 2 of the 20mg per day and that is way too much sodium for the day according to my doc).

Oral suspension packets: 20 and 40mg sachets.

Directions to make 2mg/ml solution

20mg sachet: Add 6.5ml water, to a 10ml syringe, add the 20mg sachet and shake.

40mg sachet: Add 16.5ml water, to a 20ml syringe, add the 40mg sachet and shake.

If your child tends to split up the solution, use the 40mg sachet, add 8.25ml water, and 8.25ml Mylanta cherry supreme, add the 40mg sachet and shake.

It is so hard that the marci kids website is down. That is where I got all my information. Our GI doctor at the Children's hospital ok'd the use of the 20 mg packets. He told me not to use mylanta. I believe the 40 mg packets don't have enough of the sodium buffer to be effective and that is why you need to use the mylanta with it. Hope you got it all figured out.
