Prevacid dosing/timing questions
Some questions for those of you who are administering Prevacid directly (i.e. not with any buffer)

- An empty stomach in the morning is not an issue but what about in the evening/night? Is 1 hour of not eating anything enough to have somewhat of an empty stomach? What has your experience been?

- If you feed 1/2 hr after giving the Prevacid, is it effective or do you have to wait a full hour?

- Kavya currently takes 9mg in the morn and 18mg at night (with the BB). Now without the buffer I am wondering how I can give less than 15mg or more than that. Each capsule has 15mg.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Back when I was giving Prevacid solutabs I was told that 3 hours after food was necessary. Essentially what you need is no acid in the stomach.. which equates to no food. If there is acid in the stomach the acid will destroy the meds before they get into their system. It needs a neutralized environment. I wonder if you could give childrens tums first??? I was looking at the bottle the other day. It is calcium carbonate which I think is what the caracream max may have been made with. I just don't remember for sure though. Call your doc, GI, or your pharmacist and ask them if the Childrens Tums would work to neutralize any acid in the stomach prior to giving the prevacid. As far as more or less than 15 mg at a time.. you are stuck. There is no good way to divide it. You are going to have to go to a liquid version or solutabs. So sorry..

Solutabs never suited her. She was screaming for 2 weeks on it. I might just try 15 mg morning and night (it will be a total of 30 mg...a little more than the current 27mg that she takes). I will look into the Zegerid as well...Thanks for all the info.
