Help for my son
Hi all, I'll try not to go into a long story. Sick child from infancy. Treated heavily for asthma. I am suspecting now that reflux is a big issue. Symptoms, of coughing when eating, after eating. Attacks that seem to come out of nowhere maybe two hours after eating. Very restless sleep with snoring (adenoids already removed) On one dose prevacid for many months, recently started 2 pills a day. Recently had stomach flu which seems to have made everything go downhill. Coughing at night, even though on heavy asthma meds. We are supposed to do an endoscope soon, waiting for a date. My child won't likely do a PH monitor, or a barium swallow. He is an extremely anxious child. Can a 5 year old take other meds on top of prevacid. I intend to ask about this. Just need any recommendations or suggestions that might help us manage this. I have read many postings, but there are too many to go through. DS has been checked for many other things and all are negative so far. We are completely worn out and our son is discouraged. thanks for any help, Carol

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
I feel like a bit of broken record around here, and I don't mean to imply that every child with reflux has Sensory Processing Disorder, but it is such a relatively easy thing to investigate and the treatment of it requires no invasive procedures or medications, so it feels like a good place to start when mystery prevails. In your case, the fact that you describe your son as anxious was a particularly noteworthy flag, as well as the restless sleep (did he ever have a sleep study, or just the adenoidectomy?) and coughing during and after eating. So, if you aren't familiar with SPD, take a look at the information at www.sensory-processing-disorder.com (there are symptom checklists for school aged children as well as for infants/toddlers -- at his age I'd look at both) or read "The Out Of Sync Child" by Karol Stock Kranowitz.

Isabella 10/04 Severe reflux, nissen fundo, g-tube, mito disease, epilepsy, DGE, asthma, aspiration, allergic to milk and soy
has he had a swallow study to rule out aspiration as this mimics asthma we have both and are very similiar in their symptoms. sometimes meds for asthma are only maintaining problems caused by reflux/aspiration and if those are culprits he may find asthma relief if the gi problems are found
