Reaction to Prevacid??
Hello! I'm new here so I'm still learning the ropes! Quick history... My son is 3.5 months (16 weeks) old and we've been having one issue after another. He was fed expressed breastmilk for 6 weeks then a mixture of formulas. After mucous and blood appeared in his stool he was put on Alimentum and has been on that exclusively (no BM) for the past 6 weeks. He'd been doing great with no mucous or blood in stool and had been very regular. My son has symptoms of silent reflux and the ped put him on Prevacid (compounded) 6mL/day. He's been on it for 2 weeks with no improvement. The morning after his first dose he developed a severe diaper rash that gets worse when he poops. He was constipated for a couple days then had diarrhea. The consistency and smell of his stool changed with Prevacid as well. We suspect he has MSPI but the GI specialist won't see us for another 1.5 months. His doctor said the Prevacid won't cause the rash or stool change and the pharmacist assured me there are no milk or soy ingredients in the compound.

I stopped the Prevacid a day ago and he just had mucous in his stool! Could he be sensitive to the Prevacid? Is it possible that he's suddenly intolerant of the Alimentum even though it was great for 6 weeks? These stool and rash problems appeared the night after starting Prevacid. Any advice or similar experiences??

I meant to write 6 mg/day of Prevacid (2 mL of 3mg/mL compounded)... Sorry.

Prevacid can do funny things in different kids. The most common being constipation. If he is having trouble emptying then that might cause the blood/mucous because its delayed in moving out. the odor can also come from sitting in the "gut" too long. The alimentum may be the culprit because its not broken down enough for him. Have you considered neocate? We have been on it 6 years and it has been a godsend. We were trying to wean but we lost weight so we are back on it.

His doctor said Neocate or Elecare may be an option but wants to wait until the GI specialist sees us. He was doing so great on the Alimentum stomach-wise until the day after starting the Prevacid. He also never had a really bad diaper rash other than when he was on Nutramigen for a few days - the second we switched to Alimentum his rash went away. I'm so frustrated... Whenever we try to fix one problem another comes along. I feel like his doctor just thinks I'm crazy. He also has torticollis and plagio/brachycephaly that he's wearing a DOC Band for. His sleep has been kind of a mess since starting Prevacid but it may be more related to his helmet. Pre Prevacid and helmet he would sleep 6-8 hours at once and sometimes 10. Now he's up every couple hours. :(

If everything was fine until you switched to the Prevacid, then I'd blame the prevacid.

I may be mistaken, but I think there are trace amount of milk product IN the solutabs. That may be causing your issues.

Also, a compounded medication will not be as effective as a non compounded medication. I would try to find a med that comes in a liquid for or compound it yourself.

A batch from the pharmacy does "bad" really fast. If you do it yourself, they you can make it each time you use it specifically to your tailored dose and it will work much better.

Yes, my daughter, almost 3 months had a reaction to prevacid too and doctor didnt believe us at first. Even pharmacist said it was very unlikely but prevacid has a small amount of lactose in it and if you read other boards (not sure about this one I'm new here) other parents have had similar issues with it. My son who has a milk allergy tolerates it just fine. My daughter though had a big change in her stools upon starting the prevacid and had mucous in stools that stopped a few days after stopping prevacid. She also was really gassy on it. Best of luck to you

Thank you all for your replies. I'm not really sure if they used the capsules with beads or the solutabs for the suspension. I got frustrated and didn't think to ask. Today is his 5th day off of it - less mucous, still has diarrhea which I guess is causing the rash. He's been really fighting his bottles and his throat sounds so gurgly. I want him on something that helps since we can't see the specialist until November 22. I feel so guilty for stopping nursing him at 2 months! The dairy in my diet never seemed to bother him much so if I had kept at it we really wouldn't have as much of a problem with mspi I think.

Henry was born 5/12/11 at 5.8 lbs. A peanut, for sure. He was healthy and gaining weight steadily for first 6 weeks, then began refluxing through his nose. By 3 mos. he was projectile vomiting. Trying our 4th attempt at medication and desperate for a good night's sleep.
My now 5 mo old is on Prevacid, 15mg solutab 1x/day (we tried breaking it in 1/2 and giving 2x/day, but it didn't seem to be enough med for him through the night). He also takes 1.2 ml Zantac 2x/day. But I am wondering now, after reading your post, if he is reacting to the Prevacid, as well. I looked back at the feed/sleep log I keep for him and his sleep seems to have progressively gotten worse since starting Prevacid about a month ago. Prior, he was sleeping at least 6 hours at a stretch, but sometimes longer. Now we are down to about 3-4 hours at most. We are seeing a GI Spec. for the first time on Monday, so I'll ask him about it. I've already been advised to request a trial of Zegerid powder packs. Apparently they are more effective than Zantac and Prevacid. Unlike your baby, mine is constipated from the meds. No diarrhea, rash or mucuous here. I recently added 1ml of the CVS aluminum-free liquid antacid and now he poops 1x/day, first thing in the morning. I also found pear nectar in the health food aisle today and plan to try that instead of the antacid. I just think the less meds we can be on, the better. Good luck and let us know how your situation turns out. I'll keep you posted, too.

I'm sorry to hear you're having sleep and med issues as well. The past two nights my son has gone back to 8 hour stretches so I'm suspicious that Prevacid was the culprit. I'll ask about the zegerid thanks for that info. I have been researching naturo/homeopathic type treatments as well. Please do keep me updated on your LO. These poor little babies!

We saw our GI for the 1st time on Monday and he took us off Prevacid. He said #1--it can make them irritable and if dosing at night, could be to blame for sleep problems and #2 it is not a good medicine for infants because it is difficult to dose properly. Apparently if you disolve in water, it should be dissolved in 4 oz to have the right concentration and that's simply too much water for a 5-month old. Plus, if he drank all that, he wouldn't eat afterwards. So we are now back on Prilosec, but at 3ml 2x/day, which is a fairly high dose. This is our 5th day on Prilosec and it's the best he's been in 1-1/2 months, easily. Last night was his best night of sleep (nearly 6 hours uninterrupted) as well, so I really do think the Prevacid was to blame. Hoping tonight is a repeat of last night 'cuz with that much sleep, I feel like a new woman! Good luck to you.
