Something to numb the pain?
I have a 4 month old daughter with reflux. She's on the appropriate dosing of omeprazole for her weight. She's really miserable though. Making that screeching noise where it sounds like she's trying to get away from her esophagus! She's not eating great. I'm curious...is there something they can add to "numb" the pain? Any thoughts? This is my 3rd child with reflux and each time I learn more and get more assertive about what to ask for! Thanks, Kristi

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. If you live near a CVS pharmacy you can get their CVS Cherry Supreme. Its the generic to Mylanta Cherry Supreme. Its aluminum free and safe for even infants. Have you considered changing her med to Zegerid?

PS Before I got Ryans meds straightened out and he would get really bad the ER would have me mix 1 ml of Mylanta Cherry Supreme with 1 ML of benadryl.

shoot. we don't have cvs. i live in washington state. I tried to find mylanta but couldn't find any. Any ideas where to get it? Is there a benefit to getting zegerid as opposed to omeprazole?

You can ask your pharmacist to order the Mylanta Cherry Supreme for you or order the CVS brand online.

As far as the Zegerid..... In my opinion it is more effective. Zegerid has sodium bicarbonate mixed with the Omneprazole. The sodium bicarb immediately neutralizes any acid that may be present in the stomach. This is important because if their is acid present it will destroy the omeprozole before it can be released into their systems.

my omeprazole has sodium bicarbonate in it. It's compounded and it has sodium bicarbonate listed on the bottle. It says: Each ml conatins: Omeprazole (Prilosec) 2mg Sodium Bicarbonate 8.4% 0.5ml Simple Syrup qs 1ml Is that the same thing?

Looks like the concentration of the sodium bicarb is right. I would have them eliminate the Simple Syrup though. The flavoring can make the meds unstable after a week so it is not as effective. Your LO will get use to the taste after a few days.

I was never crazy about using Maalox because of the aluminum in it. The Mylanta or CVS Cherry Supreme is calcium carbonate and magnesium. I heard somewhere that Mylanta might not be making the Cherry Supreme anymore.. low demand??? Call your pharmacist though. That is how I had too get mine. It was less than $4 and I didn't need a script for them to order it. Took about a day to get in. If no luck I would order the CVS brand and not risk the Maalox. That is just me though. Its still showing on their product website so it must still be around. I seem to recall people finding it at the Dollar Store and other strange places like that. http://www.mylanta.com/mylanta-supreme

As far as the dosage. I need to do some digging for you. I think I did 1 ml at a time at that age. Your pharmacist will know for sure. I will do some researching and get back to you

Mom to two refluxers. DS 4.5 years, on prevacid since 5 weeks. Trial wean this summer...fail. Intolerant of dairy and soy DD born Nov 2010. Currently on zegerid. Had stomach malrotation & surgery at 9 months. Avoiding dairy/soy with her while BFing.
Ditto the mylanta cherry supreme. I had to order mine from CVS and I have the CVS brand. It helps for flares.

I am a believer in zegerid thanks to Karen. My pedi wanted me to try the compounded omperazole at one point. The pharmacist mixed it with sodium bicarb but it wasn't as effective. I argued with him that the effectivness would wear off over time and he disagreed and said it was stable for a month. I found that the powder packets that I could make up myself were much better for my DD. It's lots of trial and error though.

update!
I forgot to update! We went to the dr. She actually was on the lowest dosing for her weight so we upped it and she's doing much better. I tried to the cherry mylanta and didn't notice too much of a difference. I wonder....our bottle comes in 2 week supplies, so I wonder if that's why I don't notice it getting less. Thanks for all your help. It's nice to have a place to get information!
