Gastric Emptying Scan - False Negative?
Dear families, I am wondering if any of you has had experiences with false negative gastric emptying studies. My son, who is now 4 years old, continues to suffer from recurrent projectile vomiting episodes, lack of appetite, etc. We have been to MANY different specialists and have no official diagnosis for his health issues. We have him tested for a lot of different things (upper gi and barrium swallow study, allergy tests, upper endoscopy, gastric emptying scan - all came back normal, with the exception of the upper gi, which indicated severe reflux -done at 18 months). I continue to believe that he has a motility issue, despite the fact that his gastric emptying study was normal. I was wondering if any of your kids with motility issues has ever had a false negative gastric emptying study result. If you have a negative test result and continue to see all the symptoms of a motility problem, do you end up redoing the test or just experimenting with motility drugs? (We have tried Erytromycin in the past without any results and briefly Reglan - for about only 1 week, back when our son was about 13 months old, but discontinued due to side effects). I am so frustrated with the whole situation and really trying to get to the bottom of my son's condition. I would really appreciate it if you could share some of your experiences with me. Thank you!!!!

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
I see from your signature that your son has sensory issues. Mine does too, and after nearly four years of trying to put the puzzle of his reflux and associated issues together, I found that his sensory issues were the primary culprit and that he was also suffering from a case of Post Traumatic Stress as a result of the reflux, associated issues, and medical interventions. I would be happy to tell you more about it, and would also highly recommend a book called "Trauma Through A Child's Eye's" by Peter A. Levine and Maggie Kline. Understanding the role of those two issues has had a miraculous result for us.

dear lorenzomama, I am glad to reconnect with you. You may not remember, but I have previously posted about my son's reflux, sensory issues and other related issues in this wonderful group. You have been so kind and I really appreciate all the stories that you have shared with me about your son. I too am certain that a lot of the issues my son has are sensory related but I also think that he may still have some motility issues. I recall that you have had a lot of luck with Chinese Medicine and we actually have an appointment next Friday to see a person that specializes in Chinese Medicine. We have tried acupressure in the past without much luck but really wanted to give it another try. I also want to give Cranial Sacral Therapy a try, to see if it would help with sensory overload, sleeping issues, etc. I also see that you have had a lot of luck with that. Thanks once again for your support. I would really like to stay connected with you. It is so nice to have a conversation with someone who can totally relate to what we go through. One thing I can't recall is whether you son still throws up. Kind regards, Larissa

((HUGS)) Just wanted to add that our youngest (Ella) has had really hard to treat GERD. I think our worst issues were when she was about 4. Does your son have issues with constipation as well? Any other GI symptoms? We found that in addition to GERD and motility issues Ella has atypical IBS (constipation variant). They put her on Miralax for the constipation and Levsin for the pain and spasms. The Levsin has helped a ton and we have even been able to reduce her PPI. Just thought I would mention it in case it was not something they had considered.
