Zegerid mixing for tube fed child
Ok so I am going to switch my daughter from the prevacid solutabs 15mg 2x a day and try the Zegerid powder packs. At this time until I can pick up her prescription for it I have no idea what the doctor prescribed nor how to make this stuff correctly. Getting confused reading other posts about needing a buffer, keeping it refrigerated or using a syringe to make it? Anyone shed some light on this. Dr. never discussed how to make this with me nor mentioned anything about a buffer. Also when I ask the pharmacist how to make this stuff I already want some idea of how it goes. Let's just say I have had to prove a few pharmacists wrong when we were using a prevacid suspension before. Also any side effects I should look for, how long does it take to kick in fully, do you have a waiting period before feeding to give this to her?

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
Jedd uses the prebvcaid solutabs and although I've never crushed one and diluted it in water I feel as though that would go through a tube and not need to be compounded.

You might want to try that.

I used to crush a Flintstone Multivit. and mix it with warm water and flush it right into Jedd's button with no issues at all. It never even came anywhere near clogging. I did that for about a year.

It would all depend on how the GI wrote the RX. Can you call the office or the pharmacy and see?

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
What you are reading about on the forums regarding buffers, syringes, caracream, refrigeration and the like is from those that are using Zegerid OTC capsules or mixing Prevacid with caracream. You don't need to do that with the Zegerid Powder packets. You just mix it with water.

Mom to two refluxers. DS 4.5 years, on prevacid since 5 weeks. Trial wean this Intolerant of dairy and soy DD born Nov 2010. Currently on zegerid. Had stomach malrotation & surgery at 9 months. Avoiding dairy/soy with her while BFing.
I use the powder packets. You just mix with water. The marci kids website has good information on how much water to mix it with and what concentration you will have depending on the amount of mg in the packets you use. It should work fine with a feeding tube. You can give it with out regard to meal times.
