Reflux and Congestion
My son was diagnosed with reflux at 1 1/2 months old. He has been on Zantac and it has worked for the most part for him. Three days ago he developed a lot of congestion. Pretty much we have been using the nasal aspirator and saline all day long. Am I correct to assume that the congestion can be caused by reflux? I notice that the gunk we suck out of his nose is a milky consistency. Also, should I be afraid of aspiration? The congestion has caused him to occasionally make a high pitched gasp. He is on a heart monitor for separate issue so we know he is definitely breathing. Anyone experience anything similar?

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Yes, congestion and reflux often go hand in hand, since the refluxed material can easily move up into the sinuses. Be forewarned that, prior to about the age of 2 years, the same is true of the ears -- which can lead to chronic ear infections.

I wouldn't automatically be concerned about aspiration as a result of having reflux related congestion. The typically developing brain is incredibly competent at keeping material in the digestive system out of the respiratory system. May I ask what the heart issue is that prompted the monitor?
