Stopping or not??
My son who pukes at all feeding went 4 feeding 2 days in a row without. Does anyone know if this is a sign that it is slowing down and might stop, or just 2 lucky days? He is 9 months and spends most of his time upright now. He is starting to say yuk now when he does it. It is so heartbreaking when he does. Oh yeah and he use to puke from feeding to feeding now it stops for an hour after feedings most of the time. Thank You Lisa

Is he on any kind of reflux med? What kind of formula/milk does he drink? Does the puking cause him pain/distress, or is it mostly just a nuisance? Is he a good sleeper? Does he seem to have any discomfort at feedings?

He is on prevacid, drinks similac for gas. He was in pain before the meds now he just says yuk and makes faces. He use to sleep through the night at 6 months now he is up atlest once an hour all night. Most of the time he loves to eat. Sometimes he is to tired to eat. We use vented bottles to reduce the air. WIC said next month we can start adding milk in small amounts so he will be mostly on milk by 1 year. Since she was my Dr's nurse for over 20 years they do things the same way. He is gaining weight and was at 50 % now up to 71 percentile. Most of what he pukes is formula. We have tried others with no changes, so we give him the one he likes best.

I would NOT take WICs advice on when to switch over to milk. They are doing so because it's in THEIR best interest as it is cheaper.

This is coming from someone who had to "battle" WIC twice on feeding issues because my son was tube fed.

I also had to tell them to "butt out" because they were constantly telling me medical advice about my son when all they were was a nutritionist.

I did eventually get a nutritionist who completely understood and was GREAT.

They just didn't want to pay for Jedd's super expensive RX formula. Then they wanted him on low fat milk when the GI and the nutitionist from the local feeding clinic said NO whole milk only. We had to get letters of medical nes. in order for them to give him what he needed.

I'm headed to work and have to go, will get back tonight.

I think you could be missing a milk protein intolerance. MPI symptoms mimick reflux symptoms, and often go hand in hand. MPI is quite common in babies under 1 year old, and even more common in reflux babies.

The MPI would explain why he is continuing to puke. (And why it's usually all formula.) It would also explain why he is waking up every hour all night long - my daughter used to have these exact same symptoms, and it's not normal. As soon as we put her on a hydrolized formula (we had to go with Neocate, she was too sensitive for Alimentum/Nutramigen), it was a complete 180. Stopped puking. Started sleeping through the night. No more fussing with her bottles. The combination of hydrolized formula for MPI and Prevacid for reflux was our magic bullet.

I know it's hard to sort everything out. But since you asked, my advice is to do a trial of hydrolized formula. Have you ever tried Similac Alimentum or Enfamil Nutramigen? Both of these are hydrolized, meaning the milk proteins are broken down so as to minimize reactions. Both formulas can be found in regular grocery stores I really think that you may be confusing MPI with "gas" issues.

Sometimes the puking will only get better with time (when that's the case, it's still important to control the ACID in the reflux to minimize pain.) But sometimes something is CAUSING the puking, and I think it's important you rule out milk since it's a common problem. As far as the disturbed sleep, to me that warrants further investigation. A baby that age should not be up every hour - something is maybe him uncomfortable enough that he can't sleep.

I highly encourage you to do a trial of hydrolized formula to see if that helps. Keep in mind, if he's extemely sensitive to milk protein, the Prevacid solutabs could also be bothering him since they contain dairy. (As I mentioned, my daughter is very sensitive to milk - we had to take her off the solutabs and use the Prevacid capsules instead.)

I also agree with Jeddsmommy - do not switch to whole milk! At least until you have sorted this out more. There's absolutely no reason he has to start the transition to milk right now. And if he is having trouble digesting the milk proteins, this change will only make it worse. I would try to get to the bottom of what is going on before I even consider it. If he does have MPI, he will need to be on a hydrolized formula until he grows out of it.

He was on soy and it was worse. We tried Similac Alimentum and some of the others, he wouldn't drink them. He would take one suck and screem and cry like it hurt. I was thinking maybe some of the other yukky stuff in formula might be a problem. He eats cheese and other milk products without problems. Yesterday was one of the worse days in quite some time. Then he chewed on my finger only to find a tooth. Today there is #2, 3 and 4 are trying to come out. To top things off today he is almost out of his size 24 month clothing, so we had a growing spurt. So maybe it's all this making it worse.

He probably would not drink the Alimentum because it smells and tastes like vomit. No kidding, I tasted it my son was on it by tube forever and it is NASTY stuff. Works great but it is hard to get a baby to take it orally.

If you do switch formulas, I would mix the 2 for a while and slowly switch over to the new one.

I did know someone who's DD took Alimentum by mouth for 2 years due to GERD....me shudders to think that, it is gross!!
