Weaning prevacid & 4 yr old..help!
My DS is 4 and I am trying once again to wean his prevacid. He has been on it since 5 weeks old. He has no other medical history other than reflux. I've seen a pediatric GI doctor a few times for him. His pediatrician kept thinking he would grow out of it so we never persued any testing other than upper gi and swallow study when he was just over a year old. Every time I try to wean, he gets a horrible hoarse voice and terrible behavior. tantrums galore and you just know he doesn't feel well.

I did a slow wean and he's been off prevacid for a few days and the hoarse voice is back. He says his "voice hurts" but I know it is hard for him to understand what all could be bothering him at this age (he is barely 4). Anyway, the GI doctor talked a lot about acid rebound. do you think we are dealing with this? How long does it last? He was getting hoarse voices off and on the past year and his dose was recently upped from 15 mg to 30 mg by our pediatrician while we waited to get into GI doctor.

GI wants to get him off meds for one month and then consider endoscopy and pH probe. Am I weaning him the right way? How in the world do you do a pH probe on a developmentally appropriate 4 year old? I've seen it on babies and there is no way my 4 year old will cooperate for this. I can imagine it is extremely traumatic.

DS is growing great and always been at least 75th percentile for weight/height. His symptoms for the most part have been controlled with the prevacid. Where do I go from here? Thank you so much!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Have you tries stepping down to an H2 blocker. That is what I am trying. Seems to be working. I am going to do that for 6 months then do it PRN.

No, we haven't stepped down to an H2 blocker. I didn't ask and in the appts we've had it was never suggested by the doctor.

Pepcid AC EZ Chews it the easiest H2 blocker to administer. It is OTC, chewable and about the size of the Jr. Tylenol. Tastes good too. I like the idea of giving him a chewable vs a liquid. Less "medicine feel" if you know what I mean. The kicker is that it is really really hard to find. They moved the production to a new plant and are super slow to get the production level up to meet the demand. : ( You can do a search on Walmart.com to see if it is in your area. A limited number of CVS pharmacies carry it too.

poor baby:( i never understood taking the child off meds for a month yet they say give it 2 weeks to work so he has to be miserable for a month. We havent had an endo done in awhile and we are going to be in the same boat with the traumatic experience. she is almost 7 and is not developmentally appropriate so it should be fun. i feel like i hear you saying that for the most part hes good on the prevacid so why put him through that. let me know how the testing goes
Check with your
doctor first!
