Moving Backwards
Things have been moving backwards for us, and I don't know what else to do. Chase is 20 weeks now and on prevacid 7.5 in the morning, and 7.5 in the evening. Also on baclofen .7ml 3x a day. He was doing good for about a week, and now things are not so great. He is crying every time I lay him down, whether it's to change his diaper, bathe him, or nurse him. Tonight when I laid him down to nurse him he screamed bloody murder like someone was killing him. Poor thing was trying to fall asleep so badly but just couldn't. I tried cutting out dairy, but not sure if that is even the answer anymore. I'm beyond crying. I can't stand seeing him in pain. It's just not fair to be this little and hurt so badly. When I pick him up, I HEAR the reflux in his throat. Why aren't the medications working????? I am tempted to try the mylanta cherry supreme like marci-kids recommends. I am willing to try ANYTHING at this point. Even started him on cereal tonight to try to help. Obviously that didn't work. Anyone? Any ideas? I'm 27 and going on a full head of gray hair here.

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
How long has he been on baclofen?

The prevacid is intended to eliminate acid pain, not the reflux itself, and for some babies, whether there is acid in the reflux or not, the experience of refluxing is painful and traumatic.

I'm sorry things are not going well. It is so hard to watch your little one suffer, I know....

Have you talked to your GI about upping his Prevacid dose? My daughter's reflux wasn't fully under control until we put her on 27 mg/day - split dose, once in the morning once at night. Also, how are you administering the Prevacid? I'm sure you know, but UNLESS it's compounded, you have to give it on an empty stomach 1 hr. before a meal.

So sorry to hear about your little guy. You are right, it is just not fair. I hope things improve soon.

I don't know if you have his crib elevated up. My daughter is three and still sleeps with an elevated bed. I used reclining chairs with her to sleep in until she was almost one. I even used a pack and play using the bassinet portion, elevated that up put towel rolls under her butt and sides so she couldn't go anywhere during the night just to make her comfortable. Even my three month old I don't lay flat until at least a good half hour after eating. I did pump for my daughter when she was in the NICU but shortly switched to formula like ELECARE that was so broken down and easy for her to digest. I got frustrated with having to watch everything I ate or didn't eat that could make her reflux worse. So I switched to formula where I had one constant that didn't change and then adjusted her prevacid. Do keep in mind that when you do change the meds or dosage it does take a few days to see any changes. Hang in there mom! By the way I always say they make hair dye everyday for mom's like us to get rid of the GREY that our children create.
