prevacid wean
Hi, I am trying to wean my 9-month old off of his 15 mg prevacid. Only reason is his upcoming GI appointment~ they expect us to have tried to see if he still needs to be on it. If it were up to me I'd leave things as is since we were all relatively happy on Prevacid.

But so far, I have cut his tablets in half for a week. He has been up at night quite a bit more and is harder to get to sleep. He is also clingier in the day. Of course he cut a tooth the day I started cutting back on his Prevacid so I'm having a hard time telling what is what. He has another tooth that looks close to coming through, but who knows... teeth seem to take forever to come in! Would wait for a "good time" but between colds, ear infections and teething we haven't run into one of those!!

The last couple of days he has been pooping quite a bit more than he usually does and seems like his tummy is upset maybe?

So my questions are 1) Any tips on deciding what is making him upset/ if the wean is working? 2) Should I cut out his Prevacid completely tomorrow for a week like I planned or do something else? 3) Anyone else have changes in pooping when weaning off Prevacid?

Thanks for your input!!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. If it were me, I would consider this the "failed wean" and get him back on the 15 mg. Teething makes reflux a whole lot worse. Now is not the time to be messing with it. Try again after the 1 yr molars come in.

As far as the changes in pooping... that is likely a compontent of the teething... not the Prevacid wean. Many kids will get diarhea from teething.

When the doc asks how the wean went tell him he was fussy, up all night, and clingy during the day so you put him back on it.

Why ohwhy do some DRs still feel a child*needs* to beoff meds by one is beyond me....I don't get it.

Jedd is 4 and a half and we just had to go back to a PPI again. We tried an H2 for about 18 months and just had to go back to a PPI. It has worked wonders.

I would say that you need to go back on the meds. IF they GI is not understanding when you go back to see them for the follow up visit, then you need to get a 2nd opinion.

Some kids just need the meds for longer. We feel now that our son won't ever be off meds and we and his GI are perfectly happy with that.

Paige almost 4 (GERD graduate!)
Soren 11 weeks - (GERD, Soy and Dairy sensitive) 15mg prevacid + 2mg zantac
I'd consider that a failed wean too.

back on track??
Thanks for the input... we tried 2 more days with no meds just to be sure and we are sure! Not fun!!! Any suggestions on how to get back on track quick? I dread waiting until the meds kick in full gear again :( Have some 2 year old Zantac from my daughter... Would that help? Wish we could just leave good enough alone here. This weaning business stinks.

I wouldn't use a med that old, I mean, you can if you want to but I wouldn't. Also, I wouldn't give the two meds unless the GI says itwould be OK. Many kids are on an H2 and a PPI at the same time but I would just ask first to be safe.

I would just give the Prevacid according to the dosing and it should kick in soon.

Good news :)
My little guy is back to his old self again! We are dealing with some teething, but he is napping and sleeping more and is happier in the day! No urge to try a wean again anytime soon.

Good job momma!!! Glad to hear he is feeling better. If it makes you feel better, Ryan turned 3 in May. I just took him off Zegerid last month. 2 really bad wean experiences had me really gun shy.
