Unsure if my son is suffering from GERD
Hi - I'm a brand new mom to a 3-week old son and looking forward to your advise. My son spits up during and after each feeding (he is currently taking 3 oz of formula at every 3 hrs). Some times it's the new milk and some time it's the curdy milk that he spits up. Sometimes his spit ups come from his nose (which really scares me). Occasionally he screams (like night terror) in the middle of a nap or when he's just simply awake. He would arch his body and I cannot calm him down until 5-10 minutes later he would calm down on his own. Do you think he is suffering from GERD? His pediatric told me as long as he can gain 2 lbs / month then I shouldn't worry too much and just deal with the spit up and he will outgrow it. Dr. first advised me to put Gerber rice cereal to his Similac Advance formula (1 teaspoon per 1 oz of milk) to reduce the spit up. I tried it for 3 days and told him this does not work - he then suggested I tried Enfamil AR. I did this for 3 days now and the spit up reduces (not completely gone) but he is now really constipated. I have to add some prune juice to his AR milk to help with bowel movement. I also heard babies can get addicted to the sweet in prune juice and this shouldn't be a long term solution. Do you have any suggestions on this? Also, up until he was 2 weeks old - I breastfed him in the day time and formula (Similac Advance) at night and he didn't have constipation problem. I can't breastfeed him anymore due to medical reasons. Thanks for all your help.

Tucker Sling / AR Pillow
Also, does anyone have positive/negative feedbacks on the Tucker sling and/or AR pillow? I wanted to purchase the Tucker sling but not sure if it will really work like the testimonials from the website. Thanks!

Mom to two refluxers. DS 4.5 years, on prevacid since 5 weeks. Trial wean this summer...fail. Intolerant of dairy and soy DD born Nov 2010. Currently on zegerid. Had stomach malrotation & surgery at 9 months. Avoiding dairy/soy with her while BFing.
Congrats on your new baby. I know a lot of babies have reflux and are considered "happy spitters". For my son, he would scream day and night, throw his body stiff, arch, spit up a ton when he was a few weeks old. Getting him on prevacid and me off of dairy/soy while breastfeeding worked for him. He slept on a wedge at a 45 degree angle that was made by an occupational therapist. No first had experience with tucker sling. But keeping my son upright really helped. If you continue to have troubles with the feedings, fussiness, spit up, I'd go back to your doctor. I don't have experience with thickened feeds. I think rice cereal can make some of the issues worse as they can be harder to digest. good luck!

congratulations. You have a lot goin on. was thinking maybe you should try to leave him in a swing or car seat after he eats before you purchase those items to se if it helps. There have been many drs that say as long as they are growing they are fine. just because they are growing doesnt mean they have to be in pain!!!!! Does his eyes water when he vomits? They may be issues with delayed emptying if he is bringing "old milk" up. there are some other options to prune juice(miralax) not sure if he is too little but you can check and Im sure thereo is some natural remedies out there. Also I see thickening didnt work was it something that helped at all or just not significantly. With him vomiting through the nose that could be a sign of aspiration or it could be that the force of spit up just doesnt have anywhere else to go so it comes out the nose. it may be a formula change to something that is more broken down for him. We are on neocate Jr im not saying to switch to this but there are other options of formula for him to try.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
I am not a fan of adding rice to bottles especially for one as young as yours. It's harder to digest and in turn exasperates things even for. The whole "as long as they are growing they are fine" thing drives me batty too. They shouldn't have to be in pain. Go up a couple of posts and read the info on formulas and also go to www.Marci-kids.com and read up. See what you think after reading that stuff
Check with your
doctor first!
