Took Soren to a pediatric chiropractor
My neighbor who had two boys with reflux gave me the name of the chiropractor she used and said "I know I sound like some sort of hippy freak but..." I filed it away b/c the prevacid was seeming to help but he's gotten worse over time. I've never been to a chiropractor but figured "it can't hurt right?" We went yesterday and had about an hour long appt. We are very lucky here because the woman we saw trains other ped. chiros around the country and is the president of the International Association of Pediatric Chiropractors or whatever the right order of those words is. Anyway she was very nice and totally helpful. She took his history from my pregnancy and his birth to all of his symptoms now and my diet (dairy/soy free b/c he is exclusively nursed or bottle fed breastmilk). The medication - how it's worked etc.... She examined and did some adjustments and said he was tender in 3 areas etc... Some non-chiropractic recommendations she made (besides weaning from the prevacid which I told her we're not ready for)... were - probiotic (something with bifidus without any dairy fillers) Aloe Vera Juice (organic unfiltered) about a baby spoon of it before bed (when his symptoms are the worst). It's soothing and the theory is will help his esophagus heal. We went from waking every 1.5 - 2 hours to a stretch of 6 hours then 3 then 2 before he woke for the day. A-MAZING :) I'm not sure if it's the aloe or the adjustment. We have another appt next week and I gave him aloe this morning as well (just 2ml - my estimation of a baby spoon full). Anyway - just wanted to share for any considering trying this. The adjustments are very very very gentle - not like what they do on an adult. It's more gentle but firm pressure in a spot for a bit of time. No back cracking - neck twisting stuff going on :) If you are interested but don't know where to look the local La Leche League may be able to help you find someone (even if you aren't nursing they would be happy to give you a name). I'm cautiously optimistic for now but was shocked that he actually slept THAT long. The other thing was he also sat in the high chair at dinner while we ate - this is HUGE usually my husband or I have to pace around with him so he's not fussy but he sat and babbled. shocking!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. What state do you live in?

chiropractor
Just wondering if you were still having success with the chiropractor. we have a ped chiropractor here in Indy that is supposed to treat reflux. We were having some success with prevacid and zantac but are in the middle of another flare up. If you can call it that since his reflux has never been under control for more than a week at a time. My gi doctor said going up on prevacid wouldnt help so I am looking for other options like the chiropractor.

YES! We've gone from waking ever 1.5 - 2 hours to the past two nights him sleeping from 8:30 - 4:00 am (HUGE HUGE HUGE difference for us). After the first visit he slept well the first two nights then was waking every 3 - 4 hours which was still an improvement over 1.5 - 2 hours. Then he started stretching out again this week. I'm not holding my breath for tonight but definitely needed that wonderful break. I stopped the aloe juice when I felt him jerking less after feedings. He's still not on solids b/c he had an allergic reaction to avocado :( The chiropractor felt that it could take up to 3 months to see a full benefit but was pretty confident that he could be off his medication based on similar cases she's worked on. I told her I wasn't ready to even try to wean him from the prevacid yet but if he continues to sleep this well I may try cutting the morning dose in 1/2 for two weeks to see how things go (he's on 15mg solutabs 1/2 a tab 2x a day). Anyway - my philosophy going in was "it can't hurt" and we're kind of stuck in the same pattern you're describing where it gets better for a week or so then crap-tastic again.

Yeah
So glad to hear its still working for you! I just increased his prevacid from 15mg in morning and 7.5 at night to 15mg at night also. My gi said it wouldnt help but I figured I would try it and see anyway. But I am also going to call the chiropractor in the morning. I was thinking the same as you, Cant hurt right! I am willing to try anything to get the good week to turn into an entire good month! What would that be like? I started solids a few weeks ago but he got alot worse when I started squash this week so I have stopped solids completely until this flare up is over. I will ask the chiropractor about the aloe juice. Thanks for this post!

If that doesn't work consider changing your prevacid to Zegerid. Ryan was on 30 mg of prevacid with way too many flares. Once we moved over to caracream which is basically Zegerid I was able to drop him down to 15 mg. It's that much more effective.

we had a flare up last night but it still was better than it's been (he woke at 1:45 and 4:30). I had pasta with red sauce 2 nights in a row and also realized the dairy free meatballs I had have soy in them (he's sensitive to both and I'm nursing him) so think the soy did it.

update
Just wanted to check in and see if there was any new updates on how he is doing since the chiropractor. I took Graham on friday and he was alot less fussy over the weekend. Took him again on monday and he had a good day afterwards. Having a little trouble getting him down for his naps today and he isnt napping as well but i am pretty sure he has his first tooth cutting thru right now. So I am cautiously optimistic about the chiropractor. She said it typically take 3-6 visits to see a difference.

He had his 3rd appt today and I've noticed each time he goes he's more relaxed in the afternoon after the appt than any other time. He was more "talkative" and physically more relaxed less jerking around and refluxing. They skipped one of the adjustments (his tailbone) b/c it's an internal one and the one that seems to bother him the most the last two times. His sleep has been decent except when I eat something I shouldn't like the meatballs with soy. So I think we are moving in a good direction. Before we started we'd have flare ups that I couldn't tie to anything but now the flare ups we've had have all been diet related.

Just wanted to provide another update :) Spitting up is almost gone - it's limited to big burps after big feeds which is fantastic. He was reliably spitting up every day in his car seat when I picked him up from daycare even though he hadn't eaten in over 2 hours and this week that has stopped along with the other late spitting up he was doing. We don't do the Aloe Juice any more. Sleep - he's still waking randomly but not all jerky after I feed him in the middle of the night so I'm able to nurse him and get him back in the crib after he's done. If he keeps going on this path I will try to wean him from the prevacid but I'm not ready yet to try that since we are finally starting solids. We are also starting probiotic powder but haven't been consistent with that yet b/c I keep forgetting. This is something we did with my daughter that seemed to help.
