Mom to two refluxers. DS 4.5 years, on prevacid since 5 weeks. Trial wean this summer...fail. Intolerant of dairy and soy DD born Nov 2010. Currently on zegerid. Had stomach malrotation & surgery at 9 months. Avoiding dairy/soy with her while BFing.
WWYD solids, pain ?
I have replied on the thread below about issues with reflux and solid food that shelefisher started. Anyway, my 6.5 month old is having tons of issues with solid foods...reflux flares, spitting up solids, gas, crying, arching, refusing to BF, not sleeping some nights. I have tried a variety of foods since 5 months (cereals, veg, fruits) Everything seems to cause her pain. Do I need to just stop trying for a while or do you think she needs her meds changed? She still has had reflux issues at times or not sleeping well on her current meds but nothing like what is going on now. I want her to be able to try solids for developmental reasons. But I've worked through oral aversions with liquids, I don't want her to develop one with solids. WWYD?

I would stop and wait a while. 5 months is still very young. Her body may not be ready. You have plenty of time.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. I agree. 5 months is young especially for a refluxer. Their GI tracks are less mature.

I would wait on the solids as well. They can be soo hard on their little GI tracts. We didn't have really good success with solids (baby foods) until Jedd was older. Like over a year old, closer to 18 months.

I was just going to post again about this. We tried at 5 months and backed off and just started again at 6 months. He got progressively worse each day (it's Tuesday and we started Sunday :() He's not refusing to nurse or to eat - in fact he actually loved sitting in the high chair and eating food, it was so cute! But sleep has gotten horrible and he started spitting up again today :( I'm going to take a break for a few weeks and try again. It stinks b/c he is so eager to eat. He tries to grab everything when we are all eating and watches so intently. My daughter had reflux as well but we were able to do solids easily with her. My plan is to wait a few more weeks then try with a super small amount of food. Maybe a tablespoon of rice again (total when mixed with the milk). If that works ok, I'll move to two tablespoons - if not I'll try to make it more liquidy (maybe mostly milk with a bit of rice). I'm not actually sure how I'll do it but this is what I've been thinking about since I was up most of the night :(

Have either of you taken your kids to a pediatric allergist? I see that both are intollerant to dairy and soy. It would be nice for you to know what else they are intollerant too. Plus they can help you with the right plan on how and when to introduce foods and a food diary. Certain brands of cereal have milk and soy in them and others do not. I think it is Beachnut brand that is dairy and soy free. It would be nice for you to have an expert helping you with this. My good friends son was allergic to everything under the sun. She would have gone made if she would not have had the allergist to step her through it all.

I am with you 100% on avoiding an adversion to solids. Ryan has a horrid adversion to liquids. I tip toed very very carefully around solids for that very reason.

I am still a huge huge proponent of Zegrid. May want to give that a shot too. Also remember that monster of teething. Poke around in there and make sure that is not what you are dealing with. Teething is a awful for refluxers.

Thanks for the posts. My DD is actually 6 and a half month old (nearly 7 months now). We started solids on and off since 4 and a half months. I recently went back to trying oatmeal cereal (Earth's best organic...is this dairy/soy free? maybe has soy in it cause it says tocopherols..vit E in it ?) I have done 2 teaspoons with one ounce of breastmilk. The pain and gas she had for 2 full days was crazy!! Not trying cereals again. I've done a few bites of pears and probably had the most success with those. Never thought to talk to an allergist. I thought they didn't do testing or want to see kids til over a year. But that was just my experience with my older child that is intolerant of dairy and soy. I still wonder if prevacid solutabs are the answer for her. Her sleep in a mess. Child does not nap well. Maybe one nap a day of an hour or two if I am lucky. She goes to sleep easily but wakes burping or spitting up within a few minutes or up to 20 minutes. She's exhausted! Some nights she won't go to bed til 10 or 11 and that is after I have tried since 7 to put her down. Maybe she reacts to something in prevacid solutabs? We did the compound with my son for the first year. I know it decreases effectiveness but we never had the issue with the lactose or ingredients in there. Anyway, I called the doctor about her issues with solids and they relayed a message to the doctor. The nurse totally missed the point and called back telling me to make feeding solids a game, make it fun. My DD totally loves to eat from a spoon. It is her gut that can't handle it! I wanted to scream! I am giving her a break this week and will take her in if she has pain issues, sleep problems, gas, etc. I have seen a GI specialist a few months ago and felt like he blew us off and told me she just needed zantac (which has never done much for her). So much to have to figure out. Thanks for all the advice.

will general pediatricians prescribe zegrid? At one point my son was given this, but he refused due to the taste but I have some in my pantry. So tempted to do a trial. Do other people have good experience with it? So hard to give prevacid on an empty tummy.

My hunch is that it is a combo of the lactose in the solutabs and some other food sensitivies. All docs and allergists are different. Call and ask around. The allergist at our children's hospital saw Ryan under a year and in 15 minutes he was able to figure out that the recurrent cancer sores on Ryans tonsils was due to an allergic reaction to motrin. My ped at the time said it was viral. :/. Hopefully DCD will check in. She was great info on food allergies. In the meantime I would tell your doc that you want to trial Zegerid for 2 weeks to see if it makes a difference. Your regular ped can prescribe it. It is certainly worth a try. It's tough to see them in that much pain. Just remember to Tell him....Don't ask permission

Sorry you got the "make eating fun" nonsense suggestion. I wanted to smack people when they told me that. A child that is in pain from eating is not going to eat. They are not stupid. They figure out cause and effect pretty fast.

Ps. On the taste. Yes it's not the best tasting but stick with it. After 4 days or so he won't fight you any more. After a week my son would crawl to the fridge and pull at the door to get at it. He figured out quick that it made him feel better. He use to lick the cap. ; ). Many of us make our own suspension with caracream. I use the caracream z with zegerid OTC. DCD uses caracream with prevacid I think. Janet does the zegerid Powder packs via prescription. It's really what you are comfortable with. I am fortunate to family with 3 pharmacists and multiple nurses in it so I was very comfortable with it. (sometimes it pays to have 10 siblings). That and I was days from a feeding tube so I was willing to try just about anything. A lot of the compounding pharmacies are switching over to it too so calk a few of them and ask them how they make their suspension. You might be in luck.

One last suggestion for both of you....

Have either of you contacted your local Early Intervention Group. Its a free service for children under the age of 3. They have feeding therapist, nutritionists, ect. They should be equipped to help you figure out the right food introductory plan if you cant find an allergist that will see young ones.

I am back from seeing the pedi today. I got her to ok a trial of Zegrid. I'll see how this works. If not, I will try prevacid with some kind of buffer, mixing myself at home. Our doctor was really good and listened to all my concerns and willing to try a new plan. She also wanted me to try a different brand of probiotics. I will slow introduce solid foods again too. I am hoping this change helps a lot. Thanks for your help especially vigilantmom. Any tips on zegrid? 10 mg a day a proper dose? Do you give once a day or split the dose? Off to research this one. TY!

So glad to hear you have a good pedi that listens. That can make all the difference. What is your daughters weight? What brand of probiotics are you using?

My daughter is 16 pounds, 10 oz. Doctor said she doesn't dose as high as marci kids. So I know that is probably on the low end. As for probiotics, I am looking for a new brand. I have only given her partial dose of what I take. Doctor said something about primadophilus. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

It would be nice if you could get your dose to at least 14 mg because then you could do 7 in the morning and 7 at night. PPI for little ones work besk if you can split it in at least 2 doses due to how fast their bodies metabolize it. You dont want to give less than 7mg at a time so with only 10 you cant split it. Give it a shot though with once a day... I would give it around 6 or 7 pm since your nights are rough. See how things are in 10 days. You may find that the 10 works just fine. It is so much more effective than plain prevacid. Ryan was on 30 mg of prevacid with little relief. Once on the caracream, which is essentially Zegrid, I was able to drop him down to 15mg with huge relief. It was that much more effective. Hopefully you will find the same.

As far as probiotics, I really like Florajen. http://www.florajen.com/ Glueten and Dairy free and Vegen with zero taste. Plus the added bonus of they are cheaper than the stuff I was buying which was Biogia. Loved that too but I think it has traces of dairy so I would stear clear of that one for your daughter. My pharmacy sells the Florajen. $20 for 30 day supply. They always recommend it when they dispense antibiotics.

Thanks for the info. Why do I want to not give less than 7 mg at a time? Is it not effective then? I was going to split the 10 mg dose in a half. Does that not work? I will check out the probiotics. Thanks!

I read on marci kids about needing to give a minimum of 7 mg in order to have the proper amount of buffer. Hum, what to do? Not quite sure when to give medicine and don't want it to completely run out. Yes, I like the idea of controling nighttime acid to hopefully help with sleep. But she can be such a feeding refuser. I want to get her feedings back on track and not have to "dream feed" her. Guess I can try the 10 mg once a day as it was ordered and call back if it isn't working and see if we can increase.
