Tons and tons of spit up
My daughter is on 1 solutab of prevacid in the morning. The 15 mg dose and at night I give her 2 ml of Zantac. She was only getting a 1/2 tab of prevacid and we've been doingvthis for 2 weeks. I was told that I should see an improvement in the amount of spit up but I haven't. My daughters fussiness is a lot better but she still spits up around 15 - 30 times a day and decent amounts. Should I ask for more medication or is this normal for a reflux kid. It seems like doctors don't seem up care about the amount of spit up just as long as she's gaining weight which amazingly she is.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Reflux meds (PPIs) do not stop the pikes. They only remove the from the puke so it doesn't hurt them. Time and gravity will stop the pikes unless you are dealing with MSPI then you find relief my changing to a formula like alamentum.

Stupid smart type. Puke not pike. And PPIs only remove the acid so it doesn't hurt them when they do puke.

Thanks for the response. I thought so but the one GI doctor we went to said that with the increase in prevacid I should see less puke. Maybe I misunderstood her.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
The excess puking can be due to Delayed Gastric Emptying as well and a PPI won't stop that. it will just stop the puke from doing damage as it comes up. You can start a med for DGE and see if it helps. You can also have a GES (gastric emptying scan) to est for DGE.

Do you know what gastric emptying scan entails? Also what meds would be recommended?

For meds you can use Erythromycin (EES) or Reglan. Reglan has side affect but it worked great for us until we could not stand the severe crankiness....it was horrid. I was sad to see that med go. After that we stuck with EES with OK results just not as good as Reglan.

During a GES they will have the child lay on the Xray table after eating/drinking food or fluid with a tracer in it. They scan the child for a few mins and then have you come back about an hour later and scan again. Some hospitals have you scanned for longer some for shorter, it all depends on the hospitals protocols.

Hopeully Janet will check in and chime in. Her son Zach could puke by the bucket full. She jokes that Elecared polkadot carpet is all the rage in CA. : ) If you are controlling the acid, she is happy, eating and able to gain weight, you are going great! Keep it up. The pukes will get better with age as the LES strengthens. Hopefully in a couple of months you will see a big improvement in that area. Come kids like Zach battle that for a long long time, but that is not the norm.

Oh and I will add that once I got Ryan on the right PPI, he was a whole lot less gaggy... I attribute that to his stomach not being so upset all the time. He'd wake up totally green in the gills.. it was bad. Maybe that was what your doc was talking about. The reflux pukes dont go away with the PPIs but the nausea and upset stomach does if that makes sense.
