4 month old not cooing or babbling
Hi everyone Im new to this site my daughter was dx with reflux when she was 2 months old. She just had her 4 month checkup and I told the doctor that she doesn't really coo or babble, she really only moans. Do reflux babies have delays with speech? My baby spits up about 15 - 30 times a day so I know if I was her I wouldn't want to open my mouth to speak

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Jedd had delayed speech but his was due to being tube fed all of his nutrition.

You could always contact your local early intervention office and have them do a free eval at your house.

My guys were behind in cooing, babbling and smiling becaue they were in so much pain. They are now quickly gaining ground since the G tube was placed. They are enrolled in a program called Infants and Toddlers, it's a state run program, that is free to every child who qualifies as having a delay. They come out, do an evaluation and if there is a delay, they get you signed up for services. These services come to you in your home. My twins get both occupational and physical therapies once a week through the program. As your pediatricina if there is a program similar in your state. Don't worry, once she starts feeling better she'll catch up, but early intervention will really help.

Babbling won't start til later for most babies anyway. My doctor told me he doesn't even ask until the 9 month appt. Both of my reflux kids coo'd but my non-reflux kid did not so we're not a good example :) If she is smiling at you and others that she knows then I wouldn't worry so much. I think with that much spit up it may hurt to make sounds like that.

They really do catch up it the delay is due to reflux or other "fixable" health issue. Jedd's severe GERD and heart defect caused him to be greatly delay. and he is perfectly normal in his development today.

He did not sit up until about 8 months unassisted, at age 15 months his speech was about at a 9 month old and his had no oral eating skills.

Today after OT for feeding and ST for speech through early intervention he is completely normal, we can't get him to shut up and he runs constantly and eats pretty well. It was alot of work, mostly the feeding thing due to prolonged tube feeds, but it was worth every minute.
