Reflux worse with solids?
Our pediatrician asked us to try cereal at 5 months b/c Soren's still dropping on the weight curve and thought it would help. Despite knowing better (it's not enough calories to really do much) I tried an organic, dairy and soy free oat cereal and we went from almost no spit up to spit up all day and night. I was only giving him a small amount of cereal at dinner but the effect seemed to carry over all day. He's six months next week so I feel like I should try again. I bought organic brown rice cereal this time hoping that might go better. Is this common? Do I just try to see if he'll get used to it or is a day or two of spit up enough to say "nope"

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
can you do a calorie additive instead like Duocal? That is what I used with Ryan.

Level two Bbay Food
We skipped the cereal, we had tried adding it to formula to thicken the formula, but that was a mess with all the puking. So, we went right to level two baby foods when my twins were 4 1/2 months old. Our GI dr said it was fine (even though our pediatrician had said no) as long as they could learn to swallow it and didn't gag on it. Level one foods were still too liquid in texture and came back up. My guys do very well on level two foods, no reflux. They still will not take liquids by mouth. Might be worth looking into skipping the cereal and go directly to the foods - if it's ok with your GI doctor.

Mom to two refluxers. DS 4.5 years, on prevacid since 5 weeks. Trial wean this summer...fail. Intolerant of dairy and soy DD born Nov 2010. Currently on zegerid. Had stomach malrotation & surgery at 9 months. Avoiding dairy/soy with her while BFing.
I have a six month old baby. I feel like the addition of solid foods has really flared up her reflux. Our pedi and the occupational therapist we worked with for her feeding aversion (breast or bottle) said to try solids starting at 4 months. I did cereal for a while (organic oatmeal or rice) and she would spit it up or be really fussy. I cut it out for a while and she seemed better. I have been trying some foods, pears, avocado. It is just so hard to know. She spits up a lot anyway. But she has a lot of trouble napping and lots of gas. I am constantly second guessing what might be making her feel uncomfortable. I also have an older child that has reflux (still medicated for it) and solid food never presented any problems for him. He didn't spit up more and tolerated them starting at 5 months. Every kid is so different.

Mangogal - yep I know I feel like I'm constantly guessing. Did the solids stay down better than the cereal? I'd love to do sweet potatoes and avocado b/c they are both calorie dense. Especially avocado with the fat but avocado has a lot of fiber too so I worry about adding more gas. Vigilantmom - what is Doucal?

Duocal is a supplement that i use on a daily base with isabella it is fat and carbs in a pwder. it has 42 cal per tbsp we r on 10-15 scoops a day. it has definitely helped we went for a weight check and moved from the 3% to 10% i still give bolus feeds and just load the calories there. the nice thing is that it dissolves easy and doesnt really change the taste. it is made by nutricia we have been on it a long time and i dont know what i would do without it!!!

Any solids I have tried have not gone over well yet. DD really wants to eat but they are making her miserable. Sweet potato made her projectile vomit all over my white carpet! Everything else has made her more fussy, gassy, not sleep, have terrible poops. I can't find the answer. Tried rice cereal, oatmeal, sweet potato, avocado, applesauce, pears, butternut squash. It's so hard to know. After trying oatmeal again for 2 days, now DD won't nurse at all. I am having to do dream feeds again. It's very frustrating! In our case, solids haven't helped at all. My pedi keeps saying the theory is that the solid food will keep the liquids down and help with reflux but I am finding it only flares reflux and hurts her belly more.

I forgot to add, that DD hasn't had any weight issues. So the addition of solids in our case hasn't been for weight issues. Hope you can figure out something that works.
