DS born 07/2010. Dx with GERD 2 monts. Now on Prevacid 7.5mg 2x/daily. Acid good, but refulx/spit up still really bad. Breastfed. Doing well with solids.
spitting up/refluxing
Wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions (say, from prior experience) on refluxing. My 8.5 month son has been on prevacid solutabs since 2 months. His acid is so much better, so I'm thankful for that. BUT, his refluxing is still horrible. Spits up all the time. He's has very low weight gain because of this (started in 78th percentile at birth...now trying to hold onto 13th percentile!) Now that he's mobile too, I'm going to have to get rid of my rugs because he spits up so much and even if I clean it up well, the rug smells horrible! I know PPIs are to help with the acid, but are there any better ones for refluxing? I am very much considering getting off the solutabs, as they are only partially covered on insurance and we are paying a lot for them, especially since we can only use brand (the generics were horrible for him). TIA for any help.

no rice
I want to add that I still breastfeed with occasional formula, but I cannot thicken with rice cereal because he has a worse reaction to that. It has crossed my mind too that he might have DGE, but the GI wasn't quite going for that last time.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Unfortunately none of the PPIs stop the pukes.. just the acid. Nothing can stop the pukes other than surgery, which I wouldnt recommend. Time is their best friend. We all understand about the carpet... Janet will tell you that Elecare Polk a Dot carpet is all the rage right now. Another mom named her blog spot My Carpet Spots... Hopefully soon you will see the pukes get better.

I assume you already ruled out MSPI? If he is MPSI and you eliminate Milk and Soy the pukes get better too.

As far as DGE goes, you cant do much for that either. Yes there is Reglan but it comes with a risk.. Some will use low level antibiotics to move things along...

Aside from the pukes, are there other behaviors that concern you?

Thanks for the reply. I basically knew the response I would get, but I thought I'd try anyway.j As far as MSPI, it hasn't been ruled out medically (if that is even possible), but he doesn't have any of the regular symptoms. He doesn't have mucous in his stool, he poops regularly (but not too often and not too loose), doctor said no blood in stool (took that test). He is not generally irritable now that his acid is undercontrol. Yes, I can say that he can spit up after a day that I indulge more in milk products, but from what I understand all breastfed babies do that. But he isn't in pain when he vomits...it's just a lot and he keeps on going. And yes, I've heard that about DGE. I would rather not get into those drugs either. Grrr. I know I can't have it all, but I just wish there were something... I see your son took the prevacid capsules and the cc. I just ordered a sample of cc-max to do with OTC prevacid. We're on the solutabs, but they are expensive since he can't be on the generics (terrible on those) so we pay the difference from insurance. I'm hoping the OTC method works as it would be cheaper, I think. I know they will tell me mixing instructions, but does it come out to be about a pill worth a day? (He's on 7.5mg of the solutabs 2xs a day---so 15mg daily) Thanks again!

Hands down the Prevacid mixed with caracream was much much better than the solutabs for my son. Like wise the Zegrid OTC mixed with Caracream Z, which is a cheaper way to go. Ryan was always queasy when he took the solutabs the wrong move of a little tickle would be all it would take and then of course you had the whole time issue. A couple of days after changing to the Caracream the queasiness ended. Yeap, it comes out to equaling one pill a day.

Just want to chime in that my daughter has severe MSPI and she never had stool issues either - no blood or mucous in stools, no loose stools, regular BMs. She also was never cranky (quite the opposite - she has been a very busy, happy baby since day 1), and did not seem distressed when she puked/spit up. She was very restless at night though. When I put her on Neocate at 7 mos. she literally stopped puking - completely - after one feeding, and hasn't since. This is a baby that would go through 3 outfits a day at daycare from profuse spitting up. She didn't go anywhere without a bib. She's 13 mos now and hasn't worn one since the day after I switched her to Neocate. I'm hoping at this point she's outgrown her MSPI - we had an unclear trial of Alimentum a few months ago. We'll try again soon. Just something to consider - not all MSPI babies have stool issues.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
haha...yes, I'm leaving my GORGEOUS Elecare spotted carpet alone until I'm sure I'm done having children...I replaced my carpet WHILE Z was in the NICU...seemed like a great thing to do at the time!! DUH! lol Nothing stopes the puke...the BEST spot cleaner is nature's Miracle which really gets the smell out...it's at Petco...made for cat pee and dog pee I guess, but it's awesome. The worst stains are just the spots I missed while my husband was home...or a sneak attack puke...or a rush cleaning job! Oh lordy, though..my carpet is nasty.
