How to get toddler to take Nexium Suspension
My son has been prescribed Nexium suspension packets because our insurance will not pay for Prevacid. He doesn't like the thick grainy textured and goes to great lengths to spit it all out. Any tips on how to get this stuff down the hatch?

Debbie, Mom to:
Derek,10/29/02 GERD,Can't have any legumes(soy, being the worse), allergic to PN/Tree Nuts, struggled to gain weight for years, my "picky" eater,Takes Zegerid. Johnny, 12/05/99 GERD, managed by diet, allergic to cashews/pistachios.
That's a tough one! When my 8yr old was that age, I mixed it with his milk. I know it is more effective given on an empty stomach, but I had trouble getting him to drink liquid medicines also, our GI said it would reduce the effectiveness of it slightly, but it would still work. It seemed to work OK mixed with his milk. Sometimes I got him to drink it if I mixed sugar with it. You could also try putting a drop of red food coloring in it and call it his "new yummy cherry medicine". I had better luck with my son getting the pills and mixing it with applesauce on a spoon to give him. You can also ask the pharmacy to add flavoring to it. Good luck!

Thanks for the response! I am going to try it with his milk. Like your kiddo...he doesn't like taking any liquid meds.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. You might have better luck getting Prevacid OTC, opening the capsules and mixing the medicine calls with a little applesauce.

I like this idea even better from a cost standpoint. The Nexium is still $85 with insurance. Does the Prevacid have to be taken on an empty stomach?

Yes the Prevacaid should be taken on an empty stomach it's a PPI and to do it's job the best it needs an empty tummy.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
My toddler does the Zegerid suspension powder...I mix it with very little water...it's a little thick, but not grainy and he chases with water...he does surprisingly well. It costs me 90 a month though...prevacid was 65 for us...my son HATED the beads...

We got our daughter to take medicine by letting her use the dropper herself. She likes to do it herself a lot! We just have to be sure the dropper is in her mouth before she squeezes it ;)

Some of the suspensions can be mixed with food. Depends on how the pharmacy makes them. Zegrid suspension is one of them as is suspensions made from caracream and OTC PPIs.

Time makes a big difference too. Not sure how long you have been using it. Typically after a week they stop fighting. Kind of like antibiotics. About the time you are done with their days of it, they are willing taking it..

I'd force the issue for at least 10 days and see if you can get over the hump. Hopefully by then he will make the connection that although it doesnt taste great, it makes him feel so much better. These are smart kids. When Ryan was barely big enough to crawl he would be at the frige pulling at the door when he needed Mylanta.

We did the Prevacid OTC. He took it no problem. Thanks for the tip. It save me a lot of worry and money to boot.
