Hoarse Voice - vilgilant mom
Can you describe the progression of our little one's hoarse voice and reflux? My little boy, who I thought is over his reflux, developed a really hoarse and raspy voice in the last 2 weeks. It is getting progressively worse since 2 weeks ago. Is there anything else I should watch out for. He eats, but he is dropping off the charts. He is now below the 5th percentile. I'm worried all over again.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. I am so sorry you are back on the Reflux rollercoaster. It's frustrating.. I know.

For Ryan, I knew that his dosage was wrong or his weaning was not working based on his voice Over a 2 week period his voice would get more and more hoarse. His drinking would deteriate and then he would loose his voice completely and stop drinking all together. We'd end up in the ER for fluids. if you go to this site and read up on it... http://www.marci-kids.com/eerlarynx.html. I had Ryan down to 6 mg of Zegrid and try to take him off completely this last week. Today his voice is hoarse and he is attacking his nose. Back on we go.

Now all that said... it is a ton of crud going around. Perhaps it is viral but that it has been getting worse for 2 weeks leads me to believe that you are not done with the reflux quite yet.

Is he teeting or have other issues going on that may have made his reflux flare again after you had it taken care of? Teething always set things in motion for us. Remind me how old he is?

How long has be been off the PPIs? If you have had him off for awhile perhaps you could start with Pepcid chewable for immediate relief while the PPIs get back in his system. Just keep them 2 hours from each other.

This is frustrating.... I know. I was just telling my ped that. He reassured me that we are going great. He is down from 30mg a day to 6 mg given once a day. He is eating, drinking and we havent been to the ER in 20 months. Find your small victories and focus on that. If having him on a PPI helps him thrive then continue on and try to wean again in a few months.

Tis better to keep them on a PPI than to cause damage to their ears, nose, throat and voicebox. It will be a short amount of time in the grand scheme of their long and productive lives.

Thanks Karen! Rownen is 14.5 months, he was weaned at 11 months. I asked for an additional prescription, but our ped thinks the hoarse voice is from crying (we were sleep training him 2 weeks ago). I doubt it since he has cried even harder before without any problems. She said to keep an eye on it.

A hoarse voice from crying? I doubt that and it sounds like you do too. Listen to your gutt. Momma knows best.

Mom to two refluxers. DS 4.5 years, on prevacid since 5 weeks. Trial wean this summer...fail. Intolerant of dairy and soy DD born Nov 2010. Currently on zegerid. Had stomach malrotation & surgery at 9 months. Avoiding dairy/soy with her while BFing.
adding to this topic...My 3.5 year old has always gotten a hoarse, raspy voice when I've tried to wean his prevacid. At first I would think he was getting a cold. But he would have no other symptoms. I would also think that his hoarse voice was from crying. But honestly he was only crying a lot because he was in pain. So the pain caused the crying and hoarse voice, not the other way around. He has failed 3 medication weans. Is he teethign right now? That can flare reflux back up? I'd talk to your doctor and most likely get him back on reflux meds.

Another minor setback. Rownen has developed a terrible stomach flu. He has been vomitting, having diarrhea and a fever. The voice seems to be coming back, but boy is he cranky from being sick... again! We will address the meds thing once he is back to health.
