Question for moms who have/have had toddlers with reflux...
If your toddler's reflux is generally well-controlled with meds, do you still avoid foods that are typically considered "acidic"? Or do you feed your child whatever you want?

I would like to introduce tomatoes/tomato sauce into Kylie's diet - it would make things so much easier - but I've been paralyzed over the decision to do it for days. I am afraid it will make her reflux worse. And, because she is so little (13 mos old), it's all still such a guessing game - she can't tell me, so if she starts waking up at night or starts eating less, I have to try and decipher the reason from among several different possibilities.

What do you guys do when it comes to acidic foods? If you are avoiding any foods, will you please share which ones?

Also, just as a survey, will you please share what dose of PPI your toddlers are currently on? I know that babies metabolize PPIs faster than older kids and adults so some babies are on high doses - I'm wondering when most people start tapering down the higher dose of PPI.

Mom to two refluxers. DS 4.5 years, on prevacid since 5 weeks. Trial wean this Intolerant of dairy and soy DD born Nov 2010. Currently on zegerid. Had stomach malrotation & surgery at 9 months. Avoiding dairy/soy with her while BFing.
I have a 3.5 year old with reflux. He's on 15 mg of prevacid and has been since he was pretty young. I forget which month he went to 15 mg but I am thinking around 6 months. He has always failed med weans. I split the dose and do am and pm. He will eat some acid things now. He loves spaghetti sauce and ketchup. I didn't start those things til nearly 2. They don't seem to bother him. I avoid spicey foods and stuff like onions.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
I let Ryan eat what ever he wants to. I wouldnt start tapering down your dose till Kylie is done getting all of her teeth. Teething messes with reflux a lot.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
Z gets his reflux meds every morning and then he eats whatever he wants...his diet is too limited for me to limit it further...
