Zantac and prevacid questions
After a month of worsening screaming, inability to nap and not feeding well, I took our 3 month old to the pediatric er where they said he had reflux. They started him on .5ml zantac twice a day. That was 10 days ago. We saw our new pediatrician on thursday and she upped his dose to .8ml twice a day because he was still symptomatic in the late afternoon and evening. Friday was a good day. Took 3 long naps which he hasnt done since this all started. He still woke up and cried a couple times during the nap but would roll over and go back to sleep. So I thought we had found the magic drug. But today he was back to arching and crying unable to nap. In desperation I called the on call ped and he said to stop zantac and start 1/2 tablet 15mg prevacid. when I went to the pharmacy I asked how long it would take for the prevacid to kick in and she said a few days and adviced i continue the zantac until it kicks in. So do I stop the zantac or not? I am reaaly scared of making it worse waiting for prevacid to work.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Give Zantac for the first 10 days of changing to Prevacid. Keep the Zantac and Prevacid 2 hours appart from one another. Give prevacid on an empty stomach and feed 30 minutes later. It takes about 14 days for the Prevacid to be fully on boarded Are you using the solutabs? If so I would do half in the morning and half at night.

Yes it is the solutabs. He only gets 1/2 tablet once a day. Is it possible to break that down into 2 doses?

in the same boat!!!
I just wanted to say I'm in the same boat with 1/2 15 mg. Prevacid tablet a day (I have a 5-month old). We have been trying it for almost a week in addition to 4 mL Zantac (split into 2 doses) per day. Interested in responses you get on this!!!

I wouldnt cut the half tab in half again. 3 options...1. Stick to once a day 2. Go up the 15 mg a day with 1/2 in the morning and half at night or 3. Start making your own liquid compound so you can easily adjust the dosage as needed.

One more question. Should i be giving the zantac on an empty stomach? The Marci kids website says it should be.

relief
Yes I think the Prevacid is helping, but it either needs more time to fully work, or we need to up the dose. Not sure which. I need to talk to my dr. and make sure we are on the same page too... it is tough when what I find out by research is different than what he recommends.

we have been doing empty stomach too. I breastfeed and make sure he goes 2+ hours, then give the Prevacid, then wait 30 more minutes.

Yes I would give it on an empty stomach. the PPI class drugs work best that way.
