starting prevacid today
Just want to make sure I get how this goes with starting Prevacid. Right now my 4 1/2 month old is on Zantac, but when the pharmacy gets our Prevacid in (supposed to be today) we're going to switch and try that.

My plan is to dissolve Prevacid in a few mL of water (like nurse told me to) and give 1/2 hour before feeding. Should I still be giving Zantac at any time? Also how long can I expect it to take before the Prevacid starts working (or not working)? The nurse told me that it only takes a few hours to start working, but from reading posts on here, I'm not sure if that's true?

Really really hoping this will be our "silver bullet". He has been so cranky lately and having more trouble sleeping at night lately. Wondering if he is getting to the peak age for reflux? Not sure what age that is?

Thanks for your input!!!

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
you are at the peak for reflux...I wish you good luck. Zantac moms can weigh in about weaning off Zantac, but I know there are specific timing instruction for giving both..I think they need to be 2 hrrs apart. As for dosing Prevacid, as an infant, I dissilved it in a teeny bit of water and drew it up into a syringe (infant motrin syringes work great...beads dont get stuck)....and squeezed it into the cheeck toward the back...then I'd blow on his nose (which mkaes them swallow)..then you're done! It wasn't until he could fight me that it got hard!...good luck!!!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Give Zantac for the first 10 days of changing to Prevacid.

Keep the Zantac and Prevacid 2 hours appart from one another.

Give prevacid on an empty stomach and feed 30 minutes later.

It takes about 14 days for the Prevacid to be fully on boarded.

thanks... more questions
Thanks for the tips... very helpful!!! Just have to vent~ I am frustrated about the dosing he is prescribed: 1/2 of a 15 mg tablet/ day. Apparently they dissolve in air so I need to tightly wrap the 1/2 I don't use. Seems ridiculous. And according to the MARCI-Kids website that is a very small dose for a 5-month old. I did email them though so hopefully they'll have something helpful to say.

Tried the dissolve in water method and it worked ok~ a little tricky to get all of it, but I think he got most of it.

Wondering if anyone has tried putting the tablets straight in their mouth and if so how they got it to stay there to dissolve??

timing?
I am giving him the Prevacid 1.5- 2 hr. after his afternoon-nap feeding then waiting 30 min. to feed him again. Does that timing sound right? Hoping it will result in happy nights :)

When I was dosing a half tab, I used to just throw the other half in a ziplock and squeeze out the air. Truthfully we weren't on a half tab for long though...it is a low dose...I would prefer giving a full 15mg of prevacid once you wean off the Zantac, but see how he does. The smallest dose that works is always the best. As a tiny infant I could have put the tab in his cheek and let it dissolve, but once he was about 6 mo that wasn't going to happen...some kids are totally fine with that though...worth a try! I would probably give a little water right after to rinse out the mouth and make sure the beads get where they are going...

Prevacid
I totally feel your pain about these bad days, my daughter's been refluxing since about 2 weeks old. It was so frustrating even making the doctors believe she had a problem!

Prevacid solutabs will degrade if not kept in proper storage conditions. The usual directions are to dissolve the whole tablet in 5-10 ml water and then when that whole thing is fully dissolved, you give the child the dose (either half or whole amount.) The manufacturer doesn't recommend wrapping 1/2 tablet in plastic wrap but theoretically it could work. I think your pharmacy is being cheap.

7.5mg isn't an unusual dose to start with, it depends on age and doctor's experience. I hope your doctor is experienced enough to know that within a few days the dose may have to be changed!

I'm hoping my daughter gets her Prilosec soon. She is on Zantac since 1 month old and it doesn't help her that much. She is 5 months now. I wasn't planning to wean her off Zantac at all, just finish Zantac one day and give her Prilosec in the morning the next day. It should help on Day 1, and it should only take about 5 days to get to the full effect.

I hope this is informative, and I hope your little one gets relief soon!

Check with your
doctor first!
