2 Year old with reflux? I am at my wits end!
Hi, I want to believe my little guy truly wants to be a happy toddler - who wouldn't want to be happy. His sleep has been horrible from day 1. He got tubes at 4 months, that helped some, adenoids out 11 months, that helped some, tonsils out and new tubes at 21 months, that helped some. But yet, I feel like I am going to lose it. He has been waking early (before 5 am) for months now, fussy most of day. He was on reflux meds as a baby, but I don't think they helped. He is just miserable = miserable parents. I have other kids that need my attention, I am so torn and exhausted. I am going to the doctor today and ask for meds for him. I am tired of them saying oh well.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
By this point, you are way over due for meds. I would push for a PPI like Prevacaid that you can have him take. They make a solutab that should work well.

I would not want them to start you with an H2blocker like Zantac. It really won't work well even though the vast majority of GIs want to start with it.

Have you had any testing done yet?

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
I am with Jessica. Given his issues with this ears, nose and throat, he is over due for meds. Given what you said about the doc, you are over due for a new one of those too.

Go to www.marci-kids.com. On the right hand side click on Disorders, EER Article. Then on the left hand side click on Effets of EER Pharnyx, sinuses and ears. I think you will find this informtion very helpful.

Lastly, I am not telling you to go around your doctor.. just telling you about your options. PPIs like Prevacid, Prilosec and Zegrid are all Over the Counter now. You can open a capsule of Prevacid, poor it bead over applesauce and give it that way. No script needed. If you want to make it even easier for yourself, order the buffer babies, Caracream Z or Caracream Max from Marci-kids (www.refluxsolution.com, which is their retail site) and mix with the over the counter PPI to turn it into a liquid. The caracream significantly improves the absorbtion of PPIs. You might find it is much more effective than it was when you gave it to him last time.

How did your Dr. Appt go?

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Since no one gave me a heads up about this, I will give one to you -- in the event that meds don't seem to help, educate yourself about Sensory Processing Disorder. It is not uncommon among children who have long term reflux issues, though it isn't clear whether the reflux causes it or whether it causes, or exacerbates, reflux. Here is a link to a site where you can find a symptoms checklist for infants and toddlers (go to "Helping Baby Sleep" in the menu on the left sidebar, and click on the "The Infant/Toddler SPD Checklist") -- that may help you decide if it is something that might be at play with your LO. If you find that it fits, you'll want to get an evaluation done by a qualified Occupational Therapist (who has experience with SPD). I pass this along simply because it can't hurt to look into it, and I wish I had known of it years ago -- since we started OT with my son, our lives have improved dramatically...

2 healthy daughters (knock wood) Cory (16), Kim (11) & Eric (4) diagnosed with e.e. (scoped 8/08), GERD & severe food/seasonal allergies, asthma. Cried non-stop first 17 mths. of life Found out he is allergic to cow's milk, soy, eggs, and peanuts. Takes Prevacid, Neocate One Plus & Flovent.
Don't forget to consider food allergies/intolerances. They have linked some cases of reflux, ear infections, etc. with milk allergies. Was that ever an issue? Was he ever tested or have you ever eliminated dairy for a short while to see if there was a difference?
