Reglan Question - Infants
I have 3 months old identical twin boys with GERD. So far the GI doctor has tried Zantaz, Prevacid, and Neocate formula, all without any relief. They have had an ultrasound, which came back normal. Two days ago they had a barium series. If that is normal, the GI doctor will start them on Reglan, and I wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this medication? How did it work for you? They are at the point now where they are refusing a lot of feeds, and you can hear the acid gurgling in their stomach.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Just my humble opinion, but before I went the Reglan route I would try Zegrid mixed with Caracream Z. You can get it from Reglan has worked for some but it comes with nasty consumer warnings. If it were me I would stay with the Neocate, change the PPI to Zegrid and add erythomycin or periactin. Give that combo 3 weeks and see where you are.

Noah 6 years
Paige almost 4 (GERD graduate!)
Soren 11 weeks - (GERD, Soy and Dairy sensitive) 15mg prevacid + 2mg zantac
I'm so glad you posted this because I have a feeling that's what will be recommended at the GI next week for Soren. I took Reglan when I was nursing my first son b/c of supply issues and can tell you the side-effects are beyond nasty. I am a very upbeat person and have never been depressed and within 2 days of taking it I was totally depressed and it was such a bizarre feeling for me. I stopped taking it after 2 weeks and the feeling was going about 3 days after taking it.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
Any child that is on Reglan for DGE most likely ALSO needs to be on a PPI. My son was on Prevacid and still threw up and refused feeds all the time...he was never hungry because his tummy never emptied. Reglan was a WONDER drug for us. it wasn't til almost a year later that he had to have his dose increased and then side affects appeared and we discontinued...the side effects stopped. I was sad to lose the drug. It really was a lifesaver for a while. MOST docs start with Ery-Ped (erythromyacin) first, however because it's considered safer. Good luck.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
I would start with Erythromycin first and see how that goes.

We did Reglan for Jedd for about 16 weeks. It was a wonder drug but he had extreme irritability. I'm talking, screaming, whinning.....all day long!!

Reglan really worked well for him. He took a low dose 5 times per day. We just spread them out 30 mins before each tube feed during the day and then spread the last dose out in the middle of the night.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Due to other issues, the boys cannot take erythomycin. The barium series was normal, and we have now started a low dose of Reglan 3 times a day. I don't know how long it takes the Reglan to begin working, but I sure hope this helps. All they do is cry ALL DAY. There's never any smiles or talking, just crying. I feel awful for them.
Check with your
doctor first!
