Solutab admin...partial dose
I have a question about giving a partial dose of a prevacid solutab. The doctor wants us to increase to 5mg twice a day. This is her instructions, please tell me if this is correct administration guidelines. Take 15 mg solutab, place in syringe. Add 6 mL of water. Give 2 mL in Am and 2 mL in PM. Use the same syringe for the day. When you add the water, the solutab turns into beads. These all kind of clump together or all to one end of the syringe. How can I give it so it is a more accurate dose? I left the syringe with the medication and water sitting overnight. Now it turned purple and looks like the beads dissolved. Is it in solution now? It is safe to wait for it all to dissolve like this overnight? Is it still effective? I thought the package said to give with in 15 minutes of dissolving in water. What are your thoughts? Thanks! Oh, I am giving med to a 3 month old and dont' want to do the compounding prevacid due to cost and loss of effectiveness after 2 weeks.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
the problem with that is that there's no real way to give them same amount of actual medicine each time. Most docs either prescribe 7.5mg (half the solutab) or 15mg. My son started out at 4 months on the full 15 mg and deperately needed it. I can't imagine a smaller dose than half of a solutab doing much good. I'd probably discuss with my doctor. I also sont imagine it's much good sitting overnight. They will tell you you aren't even supposed to split the dose as once the tab is exposed to air it starts to break down, however when I was splitting the dose I put the half tab immediately into a ziplock and stored it carefully. In any event I dont think you're being given the best advise on dosing. The beads ARE the med...the rest is a lactose base that tastes like strawberry to help get it down. Good luck and I hope you find a good solution!!

Ps if you're havin trouble with the syringe get the one that comes with infant Motrin...we found it to be the perfect size to keep the beads from clogging.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. I agree with Janet. The advise on dosing is not the best. Once disolved the meds are suppose to be given with in 10 minutes. You do not want the medicine balls to disolve. The balls protect it from the acid in the stomach. You are going to have to do 1/2 tab morning and night or switch to liquid which you can get made by the pharmacy or do yourself.

Thanks for your advice. I didn't think this sounded right with diluting it and saving the dose for later. I am attempting to just do a 1/3 of a tablet. I can't get into the GI doctor until mid march. :( My pedi was VERY hesitant to increase her dose at all so I know she would not be for going to 1/2 tablet twice a day. Wish it didn't take so long to see GI.

There are peds out there that are very good with dealing with reflux kids. Ask around to your friends and co workers. I am sure you will find one. I know it is a pain to switch but its worth it when you dont have to wait so long to be seen like you do with a GI.

My pedi had never dealt with reflux like Z's ...luckily she was willing to admit that and do some research on his behalf on proper dosing. These kids often metabolize MUCH faster than adults and can actually handle a higher dose. Hopefully you can find a GI that will agree that a half dose in the am and a half in the pm is the way to go...cutting those things is a pain, but it's better than what you're doing now! Good luck!
