Can reflux come back with Cold/Cough
We had successfully weaned our son off Losec by the time he turned 1 year old in December. Things seemed to be going well for a while and then bam, he developed a really bad cough/cold 2 days ago. Now he is spitting up constantly. He will spit up while eating or drinking (appetite decreased significantly) or while coughing. He has been diagnosed with an upper and lower respiratory infection as well as an ear infection. Have any of you mom's seen a reflux flare with sickness or is this just common with a severe cold?

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
Couple of things to ponder...

1. Yes colds, upper respiratory infections and ear infections can do a real number on the GI tract. Between the extra drainage, mucus and antibiotics you can be dodging puke for a while. Probiotics, Vicks vapor rub on the feet and a humidifier are your friends right now. Dairy products make the mucos worse so if he doing well on solids try to back off the milk for a few days.

2. Watch carefully on how he responds after the bacterial infection has run its course. There is a small chance that the wean was not "successfull". It takes about 3 weeks for all the meds to clear his system. Be sure that the ear infection and upper resperatory issues were not flared or worsened from the reflux rearing its ugly head. It probably is not the case given all the crud going around right now, but dont rule it out. See what happens in the next 10 days. My clue on how we were doing on the wean was Ryans ears and nose.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Jedd's only sign of an ear infection when he was little (before tubes) was that he would become a pukey mess. Nothing would stay down. No fever, just his GI tract would come to a screeching halt for some reason.

Just his reaction to ear infection. A Mom at church told me her so (with no GERD) had the same reaction.

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
So that they can't accidentally get it on their hands and potentially into the mucous membranes of their eyes, nose, etc -- where it would burn like the dickens.

Turns out our little boy had the stomach/cold virus that seems to be hitting hard right now. He couldn't keep anything down for 3 days and started getting a bit better after that. It has been 2 weeks since the virus hit and he is not throwing up anymore.... but appetite is still low. I hate cold and flu season.
