Zantac better than PPI's? PPI's caused stomach pain
My sons are age 11 and 8 now. They always have had stomach pain with the PPI's and decreased appetite. We seem to have better luck with the zantac. Anyone else experience this, and if so, could you tell me the dose your child is on? Our GI and Ped. don't agree on it. Thanks

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. My guy is still little and we are on our way off of the PPIs. I give him a Pepcid AC chewables on the nights he will be eating trigger foods such as red sauces. I have found that the pharmacist are best at figuring out correct dosages.

I do not know what your histor is with your boys, but now that they are older and can tell you that they are feeling bad, have you tried alternative ways to manage the reflux vs PPIs? My cousin treats hers with aloe vera juice, probiotics and digetive enzymes.

I have tried lots of alternatives, and had no luck with them. We mostly were using Maalox as needed and zantac when real bad, like after having pizza with a lot of sauce. Right now they are on no regular meds, but both still wake up with a lot of throat clearing and sinus issues. They've seen an allergist, and he doesn't think dust alone could cause it, and thinks it's the reflux and thought they should be back on regular meds. First I'm going to try a bland diet for a couple weeks and see how it goes. My older son will tell me he gets real itchy, especially his ears, which get red when he eats sauce or spicy things.

Is it possible that he is allergic to tomatoes???

If you put them back on a PPI you might want to add a digestive enzyme and a strong probiotic to the mix. The may help with the appetite and stomach pains.

I guess it's possible he's allergic to tomatoes. But he also reacts to garlic, onion, citrus, chocolate, all the reflux triggers, so I don't think so.

I dont doubt that they have reflux but I wonder if an allergist could help you figure out if a food allergy is at the root of the reflux. Its worth a shot. You write a list of the foods you suspect and they will do a scratch test for those and foods in their family groups. It doesnt hurt and can be very informative for you.

I also wonder if Zegrid OTC would be a better match for them instead of Prevacid. If they can swallow capsules that is. The sodium bicabonate in the capsules may help with their stomach aches.

Have they been tested for H Pylori bacteria?

PS. I know a few people that have had a lot of success using Prelief prior to eating to trigger foods. The idea is to allow them to still eat the foods they love but eliminate the bothersome acid.

alternative to PPIs
I have researched and last 2months been using Organic apple cider vinegar with mother, for my son as a drink with (free from bad things such as colours and so on) apple juice, my method is a glass of apple juice with a dessert spoon of the vinegar, please look into this, life is so much better but do remember this is my method, so please research yourself as the dose I give my son now may be more than your child needs dependent on age and size, it took me two months to get the dose correct for him and he is 9 years old and short for his age, its a great remedy for many things but especially the digestive system, you need the one with mother, it has the enzymes and nutrients the body needs to help this condition. I as a mother am so relieved after all the problems he has had, and constant antacids that dont really help and can cause agrevation in some cases, omeprazole did'nt work it irritated and so many others. I am just a mother and just ask you to look into this it truelly works in my sons case and only hope it is of some help.
