Weight Gain
We were in the dr's the other day and Mason was at 16lbs 2oz at almost 6mos old. In the 3.5 weeks since his last appt he has only gained 6oz (was 15lbs 12oz on Oct 22). I am stumped cause he has been eating so much more but in the month prior to Oct 22 he had gained 10oz with almost half the intake! I don't understand how he can be eating more with no fussing and gain less weight! Nothing has changed, he still is on Nutramigen and Prevacid Solutab 7.5mg twice a day. Could it be cause he just started to sit up on his own and he's just burning more calories now?? Any ideas?? Any reccomendations of what I can do to encourage more weight gain??

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
This is a sign that his caloric in take needs to be upped even more. As kids grown and start to move about more and more and more...LOL They need to replenish those calories.

At one point Jedd was taking in about 2,000 cals per day orally and tubed and was barely gaining weight at all.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
With each phase of movement mastery they burn way more calories. If it makes you feel better, my son wasnt sniffing 16 pounds at 6 months. : ) If he is happy, healthy , eating well and staying on his own growth curve, dont stress yourself out about it.

He looks fine to me just not chubby at all but he keeps declining in his growth curve since birth. He was born in the 95th percentile at 9lbs 2oz 21.25 inches and has fallen almost to the 25th now he's less then 5th in the height/weight curve. I hope he hits a growth spurt soon cause it does worry me a bit. Wow 2000 calories! How did you get that much in! Mason gets maybe 500-600 on good days counting formula and food. He is one active little man though . He NEVER stops moving EVER! Always kicking and moveing his hands nonstop!

Have learned that as long as they stay in a trend and don't lose they are good. The other consideration is that he may have grown in height which can make the difference. I agree with jeddsmom thay they tend to burn a lot more when they start to sit up crawl etc and they need to make up for it somewhere. Your baby is half the weight of my bella she just got out of 2 and 3T clothes. YEAHHHH!!!!!

As far as getting that many in during a day...we had a feeding tube so I was getting about 400 in at night while Jedd slept...LOL Great things feeding tubes are.

I also made all of Jedd's food by the time he was about 18 months old. This enabled me to boost everything he ate. We added butter, oils (several kinds) and cream cheeses as well as heavy whipping cream and pan cakesyrup to foods. I could pack as much as 45 cals per ounce sometimes way way more than that. It was fantastic.

I work with the nutritionist to learn how to track Jedd's cals. All I did was caluculate and measure whatever I put into the Magic Bullet and the divide it by the number of ounces I got from the end product.

This also allowed me to feed him foods he would normally be eating at that age in pureed forms. The taste was better than jarred food and I could control the texture. Over a long period of time I could make it chunkier and chunkier until we were able to get him to eat some of them in their original state without pureeing them. LONG pricess.

While that weight may be OK at that age, Jedd was a mere 12 punds at 6 months old...it is not ideal. Esp. since you have mentioned that %tiles are being dropped.

500-600 cals per day is not anywhere near enough....please don't take this the wrong way, but have they even suggested a feeding tube yet? At this point with that few cals/ounces it's hard to even stay hydrated.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
I turned Z's formula into sludge (once I found a balance his tummy could handle well)...Elecare, Duocal, Quik powder...I was doing 50 cals an ounce...My son wouldn't eat regular food...just milk...so I couldn't do oils and such. Z threw up anytime I tried to add oil...I worked with a nutritionist so we wouldn't do any kidney damage... And if it makes you feel ANY better my son hit 16 lbs at 12 months. He's 3 now and almost 26 lbs.
