Digestive Enzymes? - Vigilantmom?
Hi Vigilantmom, I noticed in an earlier post, you mentioned you gave your son digestive enzymes. Can you tell me which brand is reliable and if I can give that to my son to help him with better digestion? Thanks Rownen's mom

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Hi! The brand I used was Enzymedica Digest. It was suggested to me by the owner of the health food store in town. Her theory was that acid in the stomache is there to digest food. When you have to take and acid blocker because of reflux you have a harder time digesting food.. which is where digestive enzymes come into play. The theory certainly made sense to me. Ryan had "unconfirmed delayed gastric emptying". Uncomfirmed because I never had him tested, but it was pretty obvious to me. He would puke up curdled milk hours after eating and was never ever hungry. Do you have a good health food store in town that you could talk to someone about it? I was just on their website. I see that they have a kids forumla that you add to juice. I guess I would stick to the Basic through. It comes in capusules that you can open up and dump in anything. I used a half of one at a time. I only gave it with the bedtime bottle. That seemed to be the bad one for him. He would wake up soooo nauseated in the morning. After a few days on the digestive enzymes, that went a way. I gave it to him for about 6 months till him system was a little more mature. Hopefully someone else with chime in.

Whats going on with Rowen?

Thanks for the information. Rownen his plagued with constant constipation. His stool is always a firm patty. He doesn't seem to be in pain when passing them, but I think it may be caused by reduced acid and a slow moving gut. I was just wondering if digestive enzymes would help and whether it would give him more efficient absorption of nutrients.

Cant hurt. Ryan was very slow to digest too. The good news was that he did out grow that. Getting his bowels to move more quickly definately helped. On that subject... A lot of kids get constipated while on PPIs. The theory is that is it is harder for them to absorb magnesium with the decreased acid production. Many will end up on Miralax or a magnesium suppliment like Baby Calm.

I have never heard of Baby Calm. I think I am going to try it. Have you used it? Or did you stick with Miralax? Our ped feels that he is too young for Miralax. Now Rownen has developed a double ear infection. It is likely caused by the cold, but sometimes I wonder if it was from reflux because we halved his meds.

Ah.. poor kid!! Double ear infection. Ryan use to get ear infections all the time too and the antibiotics were brutal on his stomache. His ped thought it was just cold related but one look by the ENT and he knew it was from the reflux. When they put the tubes in they had to suction the acid out of his ears. He never had another ear infection again.

Our GI didnt want to start him on Mirlax till a year either. I used the Baby Calm what was even easier and had a double benifit was aluminum free Mylanta Cherry Supreme. It coated his throat, cut the acid and softened his stools. Since it is aluminum free it is approved even for new borns. It can be hard to find sometimes but my pharmacy would just order it in for him. $4 or so. Loved it. Your pharmacist can tell you the correct dose. Before I found out about that I used a oz of pear necture in a bottle of forumla once a day. Old fashion but effective cure.

Dont forget about probiotics while on antibiotics. Biogaia is a great brand. Comes in refrigerated infant drops behind the pharmacy counter at Target and Walgreens.
