Prevacid or Elecare and diarrhea
My lo just started Elecare last Tuesday and has had what appears to be diarrhea ever since (no stool stays on top of the diaper but seeps through the mesh). I called the GI specialist and he said it is likely due to the prevacid. However, she has been on prevacid for almost a month and never had diarrhea (she was also on Alimentum for most of the month and her stools were a thin clay consistency). The GI specialist suggested that I switch back to Zantac 2x a day and see if that gets rid of the diarrhea. I'm a little nervous to switch back to the Zantac because for the last three days, she has been doing better than ever before and this is a welcome change from the previous week of hell transitioning her to Elecare and then the previous 4 months of hell with reflux. Has anyone had experience with prevacid and diarrhea? Could it be the elecare causing diarrhea? The specialist said it's a-typical and if anything the Elecare should constipate her.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
if your child has a lactose issue then the Prevacid solutabs could be causing the diarreah. Its not common, but there's just enough in there to cause some kids some intestinal distress

and I think your doc is right about the elecare...it's pretty innocuous...it would be hard for it to cause diarreah...

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
I agree with above. Plus is there a flu bug going around that could be your culprit vs the Prevacid or the Elecare? All sorts of reason for GI distress...

My son has always had really runny dark green poo on this formula. Yes it seeps out sometimes and gets on his clothes (oxybaby is awesome). Is that perhaps what you are experiencing? Happening maybe 1-2 x a day? Because my pedi said that was normal and fine. If it is real diarrhea, then like someone mentioned, the lactose could be causing an allergy. Maybe a bug. But true diarrhea should not be caused by Elecare at all.

I guess my issue is I don't know if it's diarrhea or not. It doesn't seep out of her diaper but through the mesh. The GI specialist found blood in her stool and said that was an indication of a food protein allergy so that's why we're on Elecare. I didn't use prevacid for the morning and her feeds weren't very good and she seemed a little irritable so I gave it to her this afternoon. This is the first time in her four months of life that she seems happy so it's hard for me to change things right now.

My son takes Prevacid with Buffer Babies and is on Elecare. He has always had lose, watery stools. So we've added Culturelle probiotics to his day. It's helped a lot. I picked Culturelle because it is dairy and gluten free. It comes in a form for kids. I tried putting the whole dose in one bottle, but noticed that made my son constipated. So now I mix up 20 oz of Elecare at one time (use the Dr. Brown formula mixer) and add the dose to that batch. So he gets the day's dose over 4-5 bottles. This combination seems to work best for him. Culturelle is around $25/month at Walgreens and Target, but I've found it on Amazon for $21 and free shipping.

My son Levi is 13 weeks old. We figured out he has reflux @ 2 weeks. We have tried 4 different formuls (Currently Neocate) and he is taking Pepcid, Prevacid, Mylanta, Grip Water
elecare wont technically constipate her. Both Neocate and elecare are soo broken down that most of the formula gets absorbed in the intestines so there is really not enough for them to poop as often as a baby on 'regular" formula. what does come out is a dark black/green water. I brought my LO to the pediatrician because it was straight liquid and would be absorbed in the diaper. She told me to start feeding him rice as a solid food along with adding it to his bottles t make his poops a little more "formed". That made his bm a little thicker (less gets absorbed into the diaper)

Thank you for all of the advice. I am anxious to start her on cereal this month (she will be 4 months on 11/7) but I've heard that the cereal could agravate her reflux and that there could also be hidden diary in cereals so I'm hesitant to start due to likely protein allergy.

stay away from Gerber rice cereals. I used to use beech nut rice but my lo was having a hard time with it. I switched to Healthy Times Brown rice (wheat/dairy/soy free) and he does really great on it. Dont use any products that say Probiotics unless the doctor tell you to. I was becaue i didnt know and they told me it actually made my son WORSE!
Check with your
doctor first!
