mom of an Achalasian Child!
what constitutes "Disabled"
when is a kid considered disabled? where do you find the answer to this question? My son has Achalasia... myotomy, fundoplication in 2004. and a stretch in 2009. I would like to know what the determination is for the term "disabled". Seems silly to ask but with college looming, insurance asking, and dental insurance also asking ( teeth sealed for acid) anyone ever had this asked and answered? Thanks... please email me Carolyn

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
You should be able to contact Social Services and they can tell you if your child qualifies as disabled.

At one time Jedd did qualify based on his heart defect, GERD, G tube feedings, therapies, and nursing care at home.

Unfortunately, we were told too late in order to get SSI for him. :-(

I am not sure what state you live in but one thing I know is if you give up with the first answer then you shall be denied. I had to fight and fight for my daughter for SSI in PA. They turn away the people who seem not to want to fight!!!!! If you believe you and your child are entitled then appeal and appeal again. I was denied for my daughter and i went to appeal and i had to present a lot of info. This was the hardest part not on paper but emotionally. I had to revisit a lot of times i thought i chose to forget but remembered we are our childs voice and they must be heard through us!!!! Good luck!!!!
