Choking on NEOCATE?This is my second try with Neocate and each one Cole has had a choking episode! Has anyone else had this hapen? He also chokes on thicken feeds/foods such as applesauce and rice cereal? Is Neocate thicker that other formulas? He did not choke on the Nutramigen but after 9 days found mucus/blood in his stool which resulted to going on Neocate. Thanks!

hang in there. know that you are in the trenches right now. how old is Cole? We held Adeline upright for one hour after EVERY bottle for the first 10 or so months. What a pain, but her reflux was so bad we didn't have a choice and that way she kept most of her food down and gained weight. We were pretty determined and the thought of a feeding tube was always looming. She choked the first day she was born on my breastmilk, and knock on wood, not since. we have fed her bottle to her every three hours from day one. we are still at five bottles a day. know that her low tone has played a huge part in this. She has to take her pureed mush very slowly with her three meals. She has gotten better about chewing in the last couple of months. We introduced solids/pureed foods at seven months and did not have good luck with rice cereal. we went directly to gerber's organic oatmeal, mixed with her formula. did not have good luck with thickened bottles with rice cereal either. played around for a long time with simply thick nectar and got the consistancy just right. used that for well over a year. was able to go from two packets down to one and then a half a packet and then stopped. and i tried every bottle on the market and dr. brown's colic bottle worked the best for us. their # 2 and #3 nipples were the best. never had good luck with the y nipple. i also used the dr. brown's pitcher and pumped her formula about 100 times and don't shake it. adeline will only take a warm bottle. we feed adeline in the upright position and if you don't get a burp half way through, it is coming back up. could never put her over my knee to burp her, always upright and have NEVER been able to lay her down flat for a nap. she STILL sleeps up on me, my husband or the baby sitter everyday for 2-3 hours. you put her down, she gets uncomfortable and you get maybe 15 to 20 minutes of sleep and she is up and will not go back. everything has had to be modified with her. folks think we are crazy and giving into her, but our nights are still so bad, her sleep is critical! know you don't have a minute to yourself, but i always recommend to everyone to read beth's book The Reflux Book. Take a chapter a day. We have had really good luck with a nonforce chiropractor. just took adeline this week and it helped. she uses a little device called an activator, and she thumps her. her t6 area on her back is always the problem. it is like her hot spot and it is hilarious to watch when the doctor gets to that area. like a dog, saying scratch me. the muscles at this area go around to the front around of the stomach and diaphram. we first took her at either two or three months old. we also have had really good luck doing craniosacral work in the last couple of monhts. we took this month off and think that is one of the reasons her reflux has gotten worse. just trying to throw out a few things for you. not to completely overload you, but everything is trial and error!

ps. reading back over my post, we mixed the oatmeal and her formula in a bowl and fed it with a spoon, i did not mix it in her bottle.

adelines momThanks for your post! I will have to go get Dr. Browns bottles and try them. I am waiting for my BabyBuffers this week!! He had an awful night last night, choked twice so I took him off t he Neocate and we are now trying Alimentum and The ped wants me to try to breastfeed but I have dried up so here we go again with the elimination diet and trying to bring back mu milk??? Not sure how that is going to work. This war that we are in the middle is taking me down and I feel like I am drownding!! I have a name of a chiropractor so I think I will try that!! Thanks!! My good friend is an OT and I think she does cranial stuff so I will ask her!! Does it get any better? Will I be able to leave my house and stop living in fear of choking, blood and all the other bad stuff????? Thanks!!! Please keep writing to me, it helps!!!

Mom to Stanton - 2 year old with GERD, DGE and MPI
I have a bag in my car that stays.....it contains a roll of paper towels, changes of clothes for everyone, wipes, a few diapers and garbage bags. It makes me feel like I can leave my house and handle whatever happens....even if we do scare the public at large hahahahaha.....I guess my point is that it does get easier. I'm not sure my son is "better" but now that he's 27 months old I can read his signals and he can communicate a bit about what's going on - so things seem more predictable. I've also gotten over what other people might think and really, truly don't care. That was a hard place to get to - but - with that attitude, I'm not embarrassed or freaked out in public like I used to be. Hang in there and know that every time you try a new technique, a new formula, a new bottle, a new cereal, you are getting closer to finding the thing that works.
