Large Amounts of Strong Smelling UrineAnother question :-)
Does anyone else notice that their GERD infant can fill a diaper in 10-20 minutes and that the urine is so strong you can smell it from feet away?

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
|What is the odor like? How often are the diapers saturated like that? I would consider keeping a journal of all your observation of things that seem either related to GERD or which seem odd and for which you have no explanation. Journals are time consuming, but incredibly helpful down the road when you are trying to remember it all.|
I don't recall any particular odor (except when I hadn't properly washed the cloth diapers -- then, whewwwwweee!) but my son was always a heavy wetter. I assumed it had to do with his comfort nursing, but you know, now that he uses the toilet, he will hold his urine for incredibly long periods of time if I don't insist that he go, and then he has massive amounts stored up. And since exploring the sensory processing thing I have begun to learn a lot about the way some children process the feelings and signals form their bodies....

|This is not every time she wets but it's often since I try to change her before feeding because if I move her too much after eating the reflux is horrible. I would say it happens at least 5 times a day....good call on journal. I have been writing things down but I don't have times or anything. It smells like urine...just really strong...like when an adult is dehydrated but she does not seem dehydrated. Her soft spot is fine...she wets frequently and her mouth is very wet.|

|How many ounces does she take in during a day? Sometimes a child can be dehydrated and not show the all the signs of it. Have you mentioned this to the Ped to see what they think? It's always wise to ask them as well. |

|Her intake changes. During a 24 hr period I would say between 15-28oz depending on how much pain she is in and how much actually makes it's way out through puke (she tends to swallow it back down). I did ask the doctor and they said as long as she wets one diaper in 6hours and has a wet mouth she is fine...but I have lost faith in doctors and that is why I asked for advice on the forum :-( ||Check with your
