Neocate, Elecare, Peptamen Jr. questions
I went to a nutritionist in my GI's office today and she said that we should try the Neocate or Elecare since Kavya does have a milk allergy (confirmed via RAST test) and her reflux and disturbed sleep is not getting much better with all the reflux meds. Since Kavya will anyway not take any Nutramigen anymore, we are going to try Neocate or Elecare (she gave us the Elecare Vanilla and Neocate Tropical flavors). Does one taste better than the other? She also gave Peptamen Jr and Vital jr. vanilla (this is not completely elemental though - more like Nutramigen...just hydrolyzed). I am inclined to try the Neocate or Elecare first since she has the milk allergy and we have given Nutramigen for 21 months and we saw some improvement with Nutramigen when we first started it but didn't see any improvement to her reflux after that.

Also, I will have to try the Neocate or Elecare cold turkey since she is not having any of the Nutramigen now (i.e. I can't gradually ease her into it by mixing with the old formula). I will just have to give small amounts first I guess.

The nutritionist was saying that since Kavya is gaining weight (has always been in the 15 - 25% since birth) that insurance may not cover the Neocare/Elecare though she has a documented milk allergy. She is also intolerant to most other food proteins though the RAST test came negative for many of those. I am planning to get a scratch test done soon. I am in California...anyone know of any state programs that will cover these elemental formulas? I don't qualify for WIC.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Who is your insurance carrier?

We never got formula covered even though Jedd was 100% tube fed and normally when that happens it gets covered.

IMHO and please don't take this the wrong way, you can try and try and try to get it covered and they will deny deny deny deny until you give up. I know very few families that have actually gotten it covered and the vast majority of those are tube fed kids.

We had letters from DRs and everything and nothing would make our ins co budge.

It can be done, just look for a fight for sure.

I may be cynical but we had to fight for soo much from our ins co that I learned that most if not all ins co are in it for the money they can make not to help families who really need it. ;-( Sad but true.

2 healthy daughters (knock wood) Cory (16), Kim (11) & Eric (4) diagnosed with e.e. (scoped 8/08), GERD & severe food/seasonal allergies, asthma. Cried non-stop first 17 mths. of life Found out he is allergic to cow's milk, soy, eggs, and peanuts. Takes Prevacid, Neocate One Plus & Flovent.
Peptimen Jr. was horrible for my son. Says right on there something about it not being suitable for some with milk protein allergies. We do Neocate unflavored. My son got used to it early on & still drinks it at age 4 1/2. Warning: smells horrible. El

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
Zack is still on Elecare Vanilla at 3...it was SUCH an improvement from infant Elecare which is disgusting. Elecare Vanilla tastes pretty much like a vanilla shake...smells decent, too. Ours was never covered by insurance, BUT because of his feeding delays, the Birth to 3 program in California did cover it for a year and a half...it helped us out a LOT...before that I bought it on eBay.

Our INS carrier is Great West (now bought by Cigna). I haven't contacted them yet since I want to see if Kavya will even drink the Neocate or Elecare. So, far not having much luck. I have tried the Neocate tropical, Elecare Vanilla, and Neocate unflavored by itself and also blended in with banana...she at least took a few sips when blended with banana but that was it.

honestly, I think you're offering too many options...don't get me wrong I understand the desperation of getting your girl to eat...I really do...but trying so many things so quickly is just confusing and overwhelming...it's not so much about taste at this point...most of our kids are a testament to that...drinking this foul stuff for years on end...I just feel like there's something else going on here. I hope you figure it out!
