Doesn't like Nutramigen anymore
I am not completely sure of this but I think Kavya just doesn't like the taste of Nutramigen anymore. Because now even by spoon feeding and various distractions she doesn't want to drink it. Are there other options like Nutramigen that taste better? Kavya is 21 months old. I don't want to go completely elemental since I think her body handles the Nutramigen which is just hydrolysed (not completely elemental). I might also try a trial of lactose free milk in the next few days to see if her milk allergy has gotten any better. The last time we tried cow's milk was when she was about 13 months old and it didn't go well.

I really don't want this to come out wrong but.....if she was taking it well orally before, there is no reason why she can't still be taking it orally still. Provided that medical issues have not arisen in the mean time.

Alot of times kids with food issues and oral aversions will do this to see if they can "get out of eating".

Has anything changed, do you think anything medically is going on like a cold or such?

Well, we started Prevacid and that is killing her appetite so even with many solids she is making a big fuss about eating it (and she never did this before on zantac). The only thing she will easily eat now is something that she loved eating before and hence I am thinking that Nutramigen was something she never really liked (would only have with some distraction) and now with a decreased appetite, she is even less inclined to have it.

I looked at the Nesquick flavor packets but those have food colors and that doesn't suit Kavya. I think most of the Neocate formulas for 1+ are elemental. I need to see if there is anything else similar to Nutramigen (hydrolyzed) that tastes better.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
I'm afraid I have to agree with jessica...although it's not impossible, it's improbable that she just "doesn't like it anymore"... Z is the KING if doing things to get out of eating....back then it was just refusing or making himself vomit (one of my favorites...he would shove his fist in his own mouth to self gag)...now that he's older he will "fake gag", cough, tell you his tummy hurts... One thing you can do...for flavoring is to add a couple drops of vanilla...I did that with Elecare before we were able to switch to vanilla Elecare...truth is that Z didn't care, but MAN I couldnt' stand that smell!

Whatever the reason, she doesn't want to drink it and is flat out refusing it and believe me I have tried all the distractions I can think of. Since she eats very few foods due to severe allergy issues she has to drink this Nutramigen or something else similar. I have tried adding vanilla, sugar, etc - didn't make a difference. Any other ideas? Any other similar formulas that taste better? I am going to ask the doc as well.

Does she still need to be on the Nutramigen or can you switch to another formula. There are better tasting formulas out there.

Once Jedd was old enough we switched to Peptamen Jr. You will have to get an RX for it and order it through a pharmacy and pay out of pocket. It's VERY expensive but Jedd drank it orally really well for a while.

It comes in ready to feed cans and I've seen Vanilla, chocolate, and Strawberry all pre made, just pour and drink. Jedd took the vanilla the best so we stuck with that.

Have you looked into Early Intervention to see if you can qualify for O.T. services for feeding issues? It's free for the eval and it's all done in your home. It really would be worth looking into if you don't have a Peds. rehabilitation center in your area.

We are trying regular milk today (2% lactose free) to see how she handles milk now. Of course it is just 2 tsps today. She at least drank that. The last time we tried this was when she was 14 months and her reflux got really worse. The doc said that we could also try Nutren Junior. I think Peptamen Jr is even more elemental. I believe I don't need a RX for Nutren Jr. I will have to check the pharmacy to see if they have it.

Kavya is drinking water and juice from a sippy cup without a problem. She just doesn't like the Nutramigen.

Kavyamom, any luck with the milk? after a week or so of nutamigen aversion, my DD came back to it.. I wanted to ask you what fruits does she like? Mine only wants plums and nothing else. Have you tried any and in what form?

No, she is still not wanting the Nutramigen. I am going to see a Nutritionist in my GI's office tomorrow to see what other options I have. In terms of fruit, she likes Pear and is ok with banana. Pear I mix with oatmeal and banana she has on its own.

Oh, and the regular milk still doesn't suit her. She was waking up every hour and in a lot of discomfort.

I thought that I would chime in. Kody was on nutramigen and didn't start it until he was at least 10 months. He absolutely refused until we put a packet of splenda in it. From that point on he would drink it even when he was sick. My docs all knew and said whatever works. Just a thought.
