Nutramigen, Sippy cup transition not going well
Kavya was having Nutramigen in a bottle without too much trouble (I would just have to sing to her while feeding her to ensure that she finished the bottle). Now she is 20 months old and either because of teething pain or Prevacid, she all of a sudden didn't want to drink from a bottle. We thought this was a blessing in disguise since we have been trying to wean her of the bottle for some time now without much success. So, we took the opportunity to give her the Nutramigen in a sippy cup. During the first week she would drink anywhere from half to the full amount in the cup and I was so happy. Well, it didn't last long. Now, she is not drinking any of it from the sippy cup. If I give it spoon by spoon with Baby Einstein playing in the background though, she will drink it all but of course giving 4 oz of milk spoon by spoon does take time and I also don't want this to become a habit. Not sure what is going on...does she just not like the Nutramigen any more and will not feed herself the yucky stuff (but will drink it when I feed it to her by spoon)? Also, she does drink small amounts of water and juice from the sippy cup so she does know how to drink from the sippy but I would say that she is not totally comfortable (she will often spit out some of it while drinking...maybe for fun or maybe she is getting too much to comfortably swallow). Anyway, at least with water and juice she drinks an ounce or two from the sippy but with the Nutramigen now she will just take one sip or sometimes not even a sip.

Could she have an ear infection? That would make drinking from a bottle in a semi reclined position uncomfortable.

Maya has done that too. Sometimes its just temperamental- not reflux related. It passes in a while

Hopefully it's just temporary... In the meantime, maybe you could mix a small amount of rice cereal in w/the 4 oz? If nothing else it would make it a little thicker and easier/faster to feed her by spoon?

She doesn't have an ear infection. Yeah, I am actually already giving a lot of the Nutramigen with oatmeal cereal but I still have about 8 ounces that I have to give by itself. Anyway, I am just spoon feeding her this for now and hopefully it is just something temporary. Mayamom, for how long would your dd not drink from the sippy and did you also spoon feed her in the meantime?

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Faster and easier method is to put a tube in a hair coloring bottle like a straw and sqeeze it in. She will eventually suck on it like a straw. Little trick I learned from Jessica.

Oh, I would love to try this! I have never colored my hair so I have no idea what this is...will I be able to get the hair coloring bottle and tube in a store like Target? What kind of tube is this - what should I ask for in the store? I have tried every kind of sippy cup and straw cup out there and nothing is working out and she is 21 months and so I would really like for something to work. Also, with this tube, if I just squeeze it by hand will it get liquid (I think if there is already liquid in the tube when she sucks it will make it easier).

Hopefully Jessica still has photos and can post them. Basically you go to Sallys Beauty supply and ask for a hair color bottle. They look like the red ketchup bottles at restaurants. Here is a photo of one. http://www.amazon.com/Roux-Hair-Color-Applicator-Bottle/dp/B003UBMBLW. Snip the top off and slip a tube in it. You can got to Home Depot or Lowes and get some cheap tubing in the fridge accessories area. It is the plastic line that goes from the water supply to the ice maker. Slip that into the snipped tip and put some tape around it so air can not escape around the edges when you squeeze. Be careful to now squeeze too hard. I squeezed just hard enough to get the liquids going and then he took over. Once he got the hang of it then he could just use a regular straw in a normal glass. Sounds a little crazy but it works.

The squeeze bottle is routinely used at several different feeding clinics. It is made by Sally Beauty Supply company, you can buy them online and they are very cheap. I have not found them locally in the local Sally Beauty stores though.

Once you get it, you need to cut the tip down. I would buy ice cube maker tubing first so you can try and figure out how much to cut down. If you cut too far off of the tip of the bottle, it will not make a tight seal and you won't be able to squeeze any fluid up.

IMHO, this bottle is by far the BEST bottle to use with kids who have a very weak suck. Lots of people like the Honey Bear Straw cup, I do not like it at all. The suck difference is drastic once you have tried both of them together.

The Sally bottle lets you have an extremely WEAK suck and still get up some fluid.

We would squeeze it for Jedd and then over a long period of time he was able to suck up on his own. This bottle should work with thickened fluids as well but we only did thins in it.

Our first "straw" we used was fish tank tubing....LOL It was not strong enough and Jedd's jaw muscles were weak, so he had a habit of biting down on the straw to compensate....after a while that just was a bad habit we had to break. The ice cube make tubing is much more stiff and it took him much longer to destroy that tubing...LOL

Let me dig up some photos for you.
