Buffer babies vs. Caracream Max ?
I was getting ready to order the buffer babies when I noticed that on the refluxsolutions.com website I saw info about Caracream Max. It sounds like this can also be used with the prevacid OTC capsule? They also have a caracream Z which is for use with zegerid. The only difference I found with the caracream Max and BB is their statement saying "unlike buffer babies which uses sodium bicarb as a buffer, caracream max relies on Calcium based buffers, which cause less gas." Anyone using Caracream Max? I have sent an email to David as well to clarify for me what would be best to use with prevacid capsule.

Just got a response from Dr. Phillips. He said "Yes you can use either. Well BB is the longest used product and sodium bicarbonate is a highly effective buffer. CC-Max is newer and we are still gaining experience with it."

I think I will just order BB for now since this has been used for longer. But that is interesting that they have created CC-Max with calcium instead of sodium bicarb. DCD, if you are reading this, did Kylie have any gas issues when using BB?

Weirdest thing...

Last night Kylie fussed a little bit just as we were getting in bed around 10. When I went in to replace her paci, she was having terrible gas. As I got back into bed I mentioned to my husband that she's been having such awful gas at night a lot lately. He said he's noticed it on his nights too.

Before going to sleep I was messing around on my phone and decided to check PAGER, where I saw this post not two minutes after my conversation with my husband!

I thought the Caracream was for the Zegerid only - I didn't realize there are two different kinds. And I didn't realize the BB could cause gas. This certainly could explain her recent nighttime gas. And maybe the gas is responsible for her continued restlessness - I know I'm grasping at straws, but I have been doing so for a while now trying to figure this out!

I'm going to try to get in touch with my GI today to see what he thinks about the Caracream Max vs. the BB. If he approves, we may try that instead of the BB and see if we notice any improvement in her sleep.

Crazy! I will definitely let you know what happens. Keep us posted on how Kavya takes to the the BB.

Do you notice more restlessness with BB than before you started using it? Let me know what you GI said. My GI is not really that thrilled about me using either BB or Caracream Max, her main concern being that BB has the antacid sodium bicarbonate and Caracream Max has the calcium buffer. She said that antacids should only be used for a short time. Anyway, the antacid in this solution I am sure is definitely less than what you would find in a regular antacid product like Mylanta, etc. but she would still like me to try adjusting the doses of the prevacid and zantac a little to see if there is any change in Kavya's sleep pattern.

I haven't noticed more restlessness. Basically, I have not noticed any change, good or bad, in her night waking.

I'm very confused at this point. I don't know what I'm missing. The Prevacid, even with the Buffer Babies, doesn't seem to be doing anything. We've seen some improvement in her amount of spitup and nighttime cough/congestion - which I attribute to the Nutramigen. But she's still fussing with her feedings and waking up all night. She still has a rash around her eye - going on a month and a half now.

We tried her on the high PPI dose as recommended by Marci-Kids - 27 mg/day. But there is no difference from when we give her the lower dose - 18 mg/day. In fact neither seems to be doing any good so I want to stop it altogether.

With the Buffer Babies I have noticed more gas but I'm not sure if it's actually causing her discomfort. I called my GI to get some feedback on BB/Caracream but haven't heard back yet. I'm almost not even interested anymore...I feel like we need to move on to something other than PPIs entirely. They have never really done her any good.

I guess I'm thinking maybe her MSPI is responsible for the fussy feedings and night wakings. Perhaps she is one of these babies that really needs to be on Elecare/Neocate. But how would I ever get her to drink it?

Another possibility is additional allergies, I guess. Maybe she's allergic to corn, which is also in her formula. Or maybe our dog.

Who knows? I am so lost. What do we do? Where do we go from here? I feel like I'm spinning my wheels. We've tried so many things and ultimately nothing has helped. And the possibilities and combinations of what could be bothering her are really endless...how are we ever narrow it down? Meanwhile I can't even get my GI to call me back.

ps. I saw on another topic that you said you feed Kavya every 1-1.5 hrs so she never really has an empty stomach. If your GI doesn't want you using the suspensions how does she expect you to administer the PPI correctly?

Kavya will be 21 months soon and we are still spinning our wheels and nothing has helped her sleep so not sure what to tell you. Maybe you can try Prilosec or Nexium (it didn't work for us but I think it works for some). My GI says I should be able to give her food every 2 hours instead of every hour (that's easy for her to say but I have seen a difference in Kavya's reflux when I feed her every hour or 1.5 hours so I am sticking with that). At the moment not sure if Prevacid is helping at all but we will still give BB/Prevacid a try.
