Larngomalacia and eating
My son has had this barking cough since he's been born. At two months old my doctor just said he could be getting a cold, but at four months the doctor finally heard his cough and realized it was something else. I went to an ENT, they scoped him and the dr. said he had a 'floppy' larynx and that he would grow out of it, but they wanted to do some other tests. I don't know if he's had GERD, he definitely spit up more than my daughter, but it never seemed to bother him. Now he is 11 months and eating solids, but probably 2 out of the 3 meals a day he will gag and throw up. Does anyone know if this is related to the floppy larynx or something else? Is this GERD? Obviously he gets pretty upset when this happens and I dread feeding him b/c I know he will throw it up eventually. He also throws up if he cried a lot. I want to take him back to the doctor, but I don't want them performing unnecessary tests on him either if it's just due to his larynx. Thanks!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. When he throws up like this, does it mean he has GERD? What I'm picturing is that he's mucusy, so that is kind of caught up in his larynx, then I add food to that and it gets overwhelmed at that spot then he throws up. He has a cold right now, so the throwing up is even worse, it's coming out his nose. Thanks for the info, it's really helpful!

I dont think you will be able to figure that out with out doing a scope, which is not nearly as big of a deal as we moms worry that it will be. It is quick and painless. I would start my journey to answers with a good, strongly recommended, ENT and go from there. They are better qualified to answer those questions than a regular pediatrician.

The cough and the fact that you have been told that he has a floppy airway would worry me. Are they having him followed by a Pulmo to see what breathing issues are going on? Have you had a swallow study so you can see exactly what is going on when swallowing occurs?

To be honest, it's been kind of frustrating b/c my dr. hasn't done much about it. Obviously he's not the one that has to deal with the throwing up every meal and the coughing waking him up at night. He said that he will just grow out of it. Luke has had a scope and he also did a barium swallow to rule out a blood vessel choking his airway off. That test was negative and that's when they said it didn't look like he had reflux either. Though, I think the reflux was the 'silent' kind then that didn't show up for 5 or more minutes after he ate. The ENT did say that I should come back if he's having trouble eating, maybe I should start there again and go to a pulmo dr. after??

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
I agree with Jessica -- I would pursue a consult with a pulmonologist, and possibly back to an ENT (and I would insist on a referral to a PEDIATRIC specialist, because it does make a difference....)

Went to a pediatric GI doc last week- she said his cough is a reflux cough. So she put him on 15 mg Prevacid. I know I won't really start seeing it working for a few weeks, but it seems like his cough is getting worse - he keeps waking up around 3-4:00 in the morning coughing violently. However, we do put him to sleep in his crib with his bottle. I know, it's a really bad habit, but he doesn't take a pacifier and if he cries a lot, he will throw up in his crib. Do any of you think this is also causing his cough at night? Any other suggestions on how to help the reflux until the medicine kicks in? THANK YOU ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!
