Weaning down from 15 mg capsule
I am actually asking this for a friend. She has a 2.5 year old who is on 15 mg prevacid capsule (not on Buffer Babies) once a day. How do you go about weaning down from that? Her GI suggested doing alternate days. She is also considering zantac but do you just go from 15 mg prevacid one day to zantac the next day.

She could wean down to the Zantac once a day and see how it goes. I would keep some of the Prevacid on hand just in case it's needed.

We always wanted to wean down in med class but then again, we are pretty sure that Jedd will need to be on meds for a while.

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. Read his story for more specifics that just might help you too - Karen
She could also switch to solutabs and give 1/2 a tablet once a day or open the capsule and give about half of it and save the rest for the next day.

Yep, a solutab would be best. Then you could split the dose and give it once a day at half the dose and do the Zantac once per day as well for a while.

The solutab didn't suit her baby (same issue with Kavya as well - I think the additives and lactose causes issues) so she is stuck with the capsule. Vigilantmom, you mentioned giving half the capsule and saving the rest for the next day...has anyone you know done that? Would eyeballing half of it be safe to do and also would it still work well if the granules are saved for the next day (what would you save it in since the capsule would be broken).

Yes, it is safe to eyeball it. She will be giving less than she is today. Keep the left overs in a little bowl for the next day. The meds are still in their little balls. The capsule just keeps the 15mg or 30 mg dosage together in one easy capsule.
