Anyone doing PPI and zantac/axid combo?
I have been reading that zantac can be more effective at night and that PPIs might not work as well at night. Is anyone doing PPI during the day and zantac or axid at night? My GI though says to give the PPI in the evening if the night is the most difficult. I have tried different things, PPI during the day and zantac at night and also zantac in the morn and PPI at night...didn't see much of a difference.

I read the following on medicineNet.com: Prilosec Prevacid, Aciphex are proton pump inhibitors (PPI), drugs that are very effective in shutting down acid production by the stomach. Prilosec and other PPI drugs are most effective during the day, especially after meals. That is why they are taken just prior to meals. However, PPIs don't work as well at night.

Ranitidine (Zantac) is a H2-receptor-blocker. Generally H2-receptor-blockers are not as effective as the PPI drugs in suppressing stomach acid production. However, Zantac and other H2-receptor blockers work particularly well at night. Therefore maximal round the clock acid suppression is achieved by using a PPI such as Prilosec two or three times a day before meals and a H2-receptor-blocker such as Zantac at bedtime.

Just wondering what your experience was when using both PPI and zantac/axid and what worked best when? Also, reading some older posts I think some GIs don't even want you to be taking both even if they are spread apart.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
When we were weaning Jedd off a PPI and onto an H2 blocker we did both for a while.

We started out doing the PPI (Prilosec) in the morning and then doing Axid (H2 blocker) at night. Once we wanted to try to wean harder we switched to doing the H2 during the morning and the PPI at night. This allowed us to see how he would react to having just an H2 blocker for day time use.

Once he did good like that, we headed straight to an H2 blocker full time.

We only ever did 2 doses per day, morning and night time. We tried to time meds so that he could have them on an empty stomach.

Oh and FWIW, it took us a really really long time to do that weaning process. I'd say around 6-9 months, we took it really slow because of Jedd's past GERD issues.

Thank you, Jessica. Kavya was on zantac twice a day since a number of PPIs that we tried just didn't suit her. The prevacid capsule at least suits her now so we are now doing a combo of prevacid and zantac. Sleep is still bad and I have just been experimenting with the prevacid and zantac at different times. So far not seeing much improvement using PPI+zantac vs. just the zantac.
