Prevacid OTC capsule opening issue!
The prevacid OTC capsule has a black band in the middle and this makes it very hard to open it. I didn't have any issues opening the generic prilosec capsule. However, with this I need to exert more force while pulling and in the process crushed the capsule a little bit. I do a twist and pull but it is tricky since I need to exert some force but at the same time can't exert too much pressure otherwise the granules could go flying! I am opening only one capsule per day and adding to a tsp of food. What I am currently doing: place a paper towel and on top of this a cup with a spoon of yogurt. I open the capsule over this and pour the capsule contents on the spoon of yogurt. I managed ok...only one granule went outside of the spoon but since I crushed the capsule slightly, a tiny speck of it was also on the spoon and I had remove that before feeding. Sorry for being so long but hoping someone can tell me a better way of doing this!

Ryan was born May 20th 2008. 9 lbs 2 oz. Ryan’s magic bullet was 30mg of Prevacid capsules mixed with Caracream from Marci-kids (I am forever indebted to the team at Marci-kids), Claratin for the mucos, and Mirlax for the constipation. Within 2 months of this combo he jumped from the 6% to the 50% for weight and continues to climb. Be strong, listen to your instincts. You can either cut a slit in one end of a capsule with a scissors or snip the end off. Either one works for me. It is also easier to open it over a bowl and then pour the granuals on the yogurt. You have better control over your target that way.

Ditto. I just give the pill a shake to make sure all the beads are at one end and then use manicure scissors to cut off the tip of the other end. Then I pour the beads right onto a spoonful of applesauce or carrots. But I received my Buffer Babies kit today! This should make administering the Prevacid so much easier, and we won't have to worry about timing either.

Glad to hear you received your BB kit. I hope it does the trick! Yell if you have any questions about it. Dont worry if your LO doesnt like the taste at first. Ryan was the same but after a week it was no issue. Once he figured out that it was the meds that made him feel so much better, he would stand by the fridge pulling at the door yelling for it. Now he pushes the syringe plunger himself.

Haha, that is cute!

We gave Kylie her first dose this morning. It was quick and painless. Marci-Kids recommended we give her 9 mg (3 ml) three times daily, so daycare has to administer the midday dose. They already think I'm silly b/c we're always trying new things with her formula, meds, etc. in an attempt to get a handle on her reflux. They're great, but I'm sure they're rolling their eyes at this new "bottle A, bottle B" thing...

But, they just don't understand reflux. No matter what I say, I can tell they think it's just a spitting up issue she'll outgrow. She's so happy and busy, especially during the day, I can tell they think I'm overprotective "crazy mom." But they don't see her at night, when it's the worse with the disturbed sleep and the coughing, congestion, etc.

Our family doc doesn't know anything about reflux but trusts my research and instincts. She looked at the Marci-Kids stuff and sent a note over to daycare authorizing them to administer the Buffer Babies.

So I guess we'll see how this goes... Our first GI appt. is next Wednesday. With the Buffer Babies ensuring the correct dosing/timing, we should have a pretty good idea by then of whether the Prevacid is suiting or if we should try another PPI - don't you think?

Thanks everyone! Now why didn't I just try cutting it with scissors...I think my brain has left my body after 20 months of not sleeping! This forum is awesome...wish I had found it earlier.
