6 months. Does it get better? My baby boy was diagnosed with G.E.R.D. at one and a half months old. He was put on zantac 1ml 2x/day. He was at 24% for weight but docs weren't too concerned about that because he had "silence" reflux at the time and wasn't spitting up a significant amount. After about 2 months, his symptoms returned- waking up several times in the night, screaming, arching back, and finally (the straw that broke the camels back) refusing his bottle. Docs decided Prevacid might do the trick. I will admit, I only stuck with it for less than a week. It was triple the price of Zantac (which worked at first) and my son didn't like it AT ALL and it really smelled in his spit up after he ate! I told the doc that zantac really worked until he gained weight so they increased his dosage to 2ml 2x/day. That was in the end of May and now I'm noticing that he is waking more in the night and arching his back when I hold him or try to put him down. He is also having a hard time taking naps in his crib, preferring the swing instead. These are all frightfully the same symptoms as before. Oh and I forgot to mention that he is definitely no longer a "silence" reflux baby. He spits up. Oh, does he spit up. It's amazing how much. He spits up more than 4-5 times after each feeding and it's in large amounts. He is on Enfamil Lipil and has about a Tablespoon of Rice cereal in each bottle. He also just started on banana's this week and seems to like them but still spits up. In fact, today he spit up his bananas two hours after he ate them! I just want to cry again. I'm looking back at my calendar/journal I write in for my boy and I'm just consumed with his reflux once again. I know it is mild to some people and I need to remember that. I'm so thankful he is overall very healthy and I praise God for that. I'm very happy I found this website so I can learn more about GERD. I don't feel like my doctor's have helped me in this journey. I sometimes wonder if my son has something other than GERD because I just want to be able to "fix" it. I find myself hoping everyday that the spitting up will just end. Does it?

|Sorry you are dealing with GERD it's not a picnic. ((HUGS))|
You are right, Zantac is weight sensitive....I would have his weight checked and when he gains adjust the med. As long as an H2 blocker like Zantac is working there's not a need to go to something stronger.
The rice cereal in the bottle will help but....it will also make the food slower to move through the GI system. This can be why you are seeing spit ups so far after a meal. We call this a "motility issue". They can be caused by thickening with cereals and such or just because the GI tract doesn't function properly.
Yes, the spit up/vomiting does get better. I wouldn't listen to time tables the DR will give you....you may be disappointed. I like to think of it in terms of stages where we say things get better. We didn't see a great improvement until about 12/15 months old. We saw another leap around 24 months old and another GREAT leap by the time Jedd was 3.
I would not say that Jedd was typical though....he's kinda a tough case....LOL
The first milestone where you should see a great difference is when she is standing and walking. Sitting up didn't really make a difference for us.
Are you having him sleep on an incline, that can help with night sleeping.

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
|no one says it better than Jessica. As for whether it gets better...well....YES...99.999% of the time it gets better. It can be hard to read these sites and see older kids dealing with this, but remember...we are the rare ones...the rest of the reflux kids have progresses and moved on and they aren't on here...Jedd's case, Zack's case...they are anomalies. MOST kids do grow out of this by a year...
Aside from the motility issues, my son had a mild allergy to rice cereal..when we thickened his bottles with it the vomit got worse (and then it's like cement!!)...you can try oatmeal
Motility issues (spitting up hours after a feed) can be addressed with meds if necessary...most kids grow out of that too...My son improved steadily on Reglan (the drug everyone is so scared of), but most docs will start with Erythromyacin...it's generally safe. Some works for some kids...some works for others...
good luck!!! Remember to take time for yourself and enlist the help of other people who GET IT..I had one friend who could handle the vomit (we passed spit up at birth)...I knew I could leave him with her for a couple hours and she wouldn't run screaming!! gave me a break!|
