probes in older children
I am just wondering if any one has had a pH or Impedance probe done in an older child. Emily is 3.5 years old and I can not see her tolerating it well. but I am really considering this test to gauge how much she is refluxing.

We have proof from Upper Endoscopies that she does have reflux damage but she is medicated and STILL complains all the time that her tummy hurts.

how helpful did you find these tests? how well were they tolerated? would you recommend it? thanks!

Zack born 09/28/07 @ 31 weeks. Dx silent reflux @ 6 mo. Now not so silent. Switched to Elecare @ 9 mo. On Prevacid 15mg 1x daily. Looking to stop the puke and gain some lbs.
Puke stopped about 24 months and he's learning to eat...very slowly.
Still on prevacid and periactin.
our son had his at 2...although that is still young, he was certainly old enough to be very frightenend and yank it out...truth is he was fine. He had it placed in the morning...it was traumatic, but it lasted less than a minute...he didn't mess with the probe or seem to notice it all day. that night, we had a slumber party because I didn't want him getting tangled in bed...we had fun! next morning we took him back for removal..traumatic again, but this time maybe 10 seconds. it was very valuable info for us. I would just stock up on fun things to do for the 24 hours...have a slumber party that night...make sure you have some backup as you dont want the child unsupervised at all...get her a cute purse to put the probe in...somethign like that....it'll be OK. We just kept Zack SUPER busy and occupied.

Mom to Jasmine aka: Jazz 01/24/2007
Dx with silent reflux at 8 months
FPIES, DGE, MSPI. Recently diagnosed with EC (Eosin. colitis and now Primary immune deficiency disease.
Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
Hi Kat, Nate had his done last month. But There was a 4 year old girl ahead of us. She was upset and scared, but the next day I saw them for the removal, her mother told me that she had forgotten about it once at home and continued playing on as usual. I wish Nate would have done that!

Incidentally, Jazz was dx with Primary Immune deficiency disease which is likely to be causing a lot of her G.I upsets...not her reflux of course, but probably her Eosin. colitis. You never really know what the heck is going on do you????? I'm sorry that Emily is still feeling so much discomfort.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
The rule of thumb we have been told for testing is...will the test change the course of treatment?......if it won't it may not be worth it...if you think it will then go for it.

We did an Impendance on Jedd at 18 months old. he tolerated it well but we were in patient doing it. Which has it's plus, I didn't have to stay up all night taking notes on his position while sleeping or any night time activity.

Yes, once it's in it should warm up to the body and become pretty pliable, which will make it tolerable. I'm not saying she will like it but just that it will be tolerable.

The suggestions for special toys and such are a great idea....

I'm sorry she's still dealing with GERD. It stinks. :-(

Jedd was probably around 15 months....can't remember exactly....but...is the GI willing to up meds now and see if things improve...like get her on the highest dose possible and maybe add in an RX for Carafate?

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Funny you should ask -- I think Lorenzo is destined for one very soon. He just had a sleep study (zillions of wires and straps all over and expected to sleep that way -- shocked the heck out of me, but he did!) and it suggests that reflux may be severely affecting his ability to sleep normally....still. If we schedule it I'll let you know how it goes. He had one at 15 months, but he was practically a whole different person then, KWIM? Still, I was totally amazed at how well her handled the sleep study stuff, so you just never can tell....

I'm sorry Emily is still dealing with reflux too....
